Are any of you walkers?I dont do much long distance walking myself but next Sunday I am doing a 10 mile walk to raise money for cancer.I was wondering if anyone could give me abit of advice on how to pace myself on the walk and what to eat before,in the middle of the walk and after?Any other advise would be great too.Iv bought myself walking shoes and socks.Thanks.

Hi, I do quite a lot of hillwalking :)

1st I would highly recommend you wear your boots as much as poss before the walk to break them in... the last thing you want are blisters on your walk!....Also take some compeed blister patches with you. they're the best thing out there!

Foodwise.... bananas, peanutbutter & jam sandwiches, and nuts/trail mix (stashed in a pocket) are my faves as they are slow release energy foods. Jelly babies stashed in a pocket are also good for a quick energy boost!.... and way cheaper (and tastier) than the posh energy bars!

This time of yr I'd prob only take a litre of water/juice..... or 500ml and a flask of coffee :)

Take some waterproof trousers aswell as a jacket just incase, and layering is the best way forward instead of having say a thick hoody, go for 3 lightweght tops like a t-shirt (I would normally recommend a fast wicking or thermal top but if you're not doing much walking after this then it'd be a waste of money, a t shirt will be fine :)) a long sleeved top and a fleece (or 2 thin fleeces) that way you have the option to add or take off as you please and they don't take up as much space in your bag. I would not wear jean... a couple of pairs of leggings, track bottoms, combats are all good. Specialist walking trousers can be v expensive!

Pace wise, I wouldn't worry too much... you'll soon fall in to a rhythm but as a rule of thumb, the average time to walk a km is app 20mins, with a pack x

Goodluck.... and have lots of fun :)... Where are you going to/from?

Thank you so much for the advice. That has really helped alot.Im going from Belfast to Lisburn(Northern Ireland)

Wow, there's some fab views across that way! Have fun x

Thank you :) How long do you think it would roughly take to walk 10 miles?

Hi I did the moonwalk in May. It was 26.2mile power walk. I wore normal trainers but make sure you wear the ones you train in and not new! I also used 1000mile socks and didn't get a single blister!

The week before you do your long walk, keep the walks short and sweet ( I would stick to 5-6miles).

Wear thin layers as you will probably get quite warm.

I took a bum bag and in it I had my phone, plasters and jelly babies. I also had a jelly baby every time I went up a mile (I counted 26 for this reason) That kept me going! I also had a orange and a banana.

personally I would say 10miles would only take about 3hrs 20mins x

Time wise I was going on the average of 20mins every km (with a pack).... just over 16km in 10 miles = 5 and a half hrs not inc stops and hills (add app 1min for each 100m height gain and nothing for descent).

A lot of people can walk app 15 mins per 1km = 4hrs x

Thank you so much girls.Il let you know how I get on. :)

I think its cause the moonwalk was powerwalking so our average times were faster and didnt need to stop till 16miles so the first 10miles went fast xx good luck
