We need a different car for when the baby arrives, as there will be 6 of us and at the moment we only have a Honda Jazz which has 4 full seats and 1 half seat, so it's a squish at the moment for the 5 of us as it is!

We were looking at 7 seaters, but just been looking at some Fiat Multiplas as they are 6 seaters.

Just wondering if anybody has one and do you recommend it for a family of 6? We'd need enough boot space for a pram to fold up and go into.

We're only looking at second hand ones as we haven't got much money.

I've seen this one on autotrader :

It's pretty cheap and the milage is pretty good. It says it has damage to the driver's side door but to be honest I don't care about that as long as it is only cosmetic damage, because my own car has a fair number of knocks and dings to it already, so that doesn't matter to me, as long as it works properly.

What do you think? Cheers in advance x

You know that cars a category c insurance write off though don't you?

I was going to mention get a HPI check on it to check its history.

I don't know what your budget is... Could you possibly stretch to a Volvo XC90?

I personally would steer clear of that car, but nothing wrong with the multipla in general. However i would check boot space as i dont think they are that large.

The 'cat c' but at the end means that it's a cat c write off, it's had a bump and the insurance company didnt think it was worth repairing. You wouldn't be able to get a v5 fit it etc until it was repaired and inspected, and even then you might have trouble getting insurance or it might be more expensive.

Personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, it could prove expensive.

Oh I see, no I didn't know that's what it meant. Thanks all.

At the moment our budget is £650 but I'm hoping to save up some more before baby comes along. We might have a grand and a half by then. Maybe I should just hang on and see if something better comes along then.

I will just say, steer clear of Renault scenic! The seats in the back are tiny and struggle to fit a child seat in, that and if you got one of the second edition type ones, they are expensive to repair!

Cosmetic damage when looking for a new car is one thing you need to look at really carefully as it can mean unseen damage underneath Hun x

Car looks ok price is attractive but cat c scares me.how about vw sharan they have 7 seats?

To me it's something wrong more than that with this car.its way to cheap for this reg.2012 it will be one year old car or less than that.i think it's written off by insurance or owner just selling for parts.

It's a 10 year old category c insurance write off.

Volkswagen Sharan are 7 seaters and actually pretty good cars.

So glad I quoted what I was responding to in this post since it has been completely edited since.

Be careful- my friend drove into a field and hit a water irrigation system and practically ripped out the bottom of her engine and that was considered a cat c write off.

My mum has a fiat 500- and has had no end of problems with it. Keeps breaking down and its not a very good car in general she says.

I would go for a Ford- very good cars. My dad had a mondeo and he kept it going for 16 years and the way he drives is appalling- he doesn't look after cars at all.

I would steer clear from old cars if i'm honest- you have to think about how long they are going to last. I do about 12k a year, so if that car does the same it will have 120k on the clock. How much longer can you expect it to last really? The price might seem attractive but if one "big" thing goes wrong with it (which could happen the day after you have brought it) then it isn't going to be worth spending money to repair. Could you look into leasing? Or getting a small long term loan?

Also if you or your partner don't know much about cars- please only go to a dealers. There are many, many cowboys out there who will consider you and easy target and as soon as they have your money there isn't very much you can do- and if you could it would cost you more to get sorted out.

I had a fiat multipla - never again. Lots of space but that is the only good point!

Older cars with miles are fine as long as they've been looked after - my OH's uncle has a Honda Accord that had 125,000 on the clock when my OH sold it to him, and it was only 2 years old it had been worked that much - 8 years later and many more miles it's absolutely fine :)

If you want to avoid big bills, do not get a diesel - if something goes wrong on the engine then you're very quickly into a bill for thousands.

Bit of a left-field idea, but what about a BMW 7 series? Or failing that, as above, anything made by Honda.

Parts for a BMW 7 series would be very expensive.

Actually newer Nissans are made by Renault so are not as reliable .every car has its faults we just bought a 1999 Vauxhall zafira 7 seater for 600 ownwer wanted a grand and the two seats at the back can fold down. Fiats are unreliable in the trade there name spells Fix It Again Tomorrow. Renaults have many electrical faults. Citroen are ok still some probs as are French. Vw are ok . Toyota and Honda are the most reliable. And I have had a Hyundai for a while now and haven't had any problems. Oh and as I work in the motor trade I personally would never by a crash damaged car with cat c etc after . And bmws expensive to buy and parts can cost a bomb as well as Mercedes .
