why shouldnt millionaire be enitiled to CB? there kids are our countrys future as much as ours

Because they dont need it. The whole point of this was to lower spending, but they still give £30 a week to people that dont notice it. Nothing to do with the countries future.

Who is saying that they actually claim it though? I know someone who doesn't bother claiming it, I dont know what happens to it though.

£37.50 a week? would you not be cheaper sending them to school with a packet lunch?

Wonder if they will scrap the free school meals for the p1 - 3 in scotland.

Yeah, 2.50 each a day times 3! Packed lunch would be slightly cheaper, but not a lot tbh, things like fresh fruit costs a fortune, and things like fruit and opened packets of ham for sarnies don't last all week so then I'd have to go out half way through the week to buy more!
They're also not allowed to take things like crisps so I'm always a bit stuck on what to put in apart from a sarnie and a few grapes!! Whe they have trips and need pack lunch i go for things like cereal bars and a yoghurt, but when you need to buy 15 of them to last the week, it soon adds up!!

When i was on IS when my youngest was little, school meals was pretty much what made it pointless working, jobcentre worked out that if I had a minimum wage job, I would be £30 quid a week better off, but then i'd have to pay for their school meals, on top of the extra petrol to work, rent/council tax, and they basically said to me 'theres actually no way you could afford to work a minimum wage job'

I sincerely hope this has changed by the time this LO starts school!

Im not sure how I feel about the £500 only for the first child. Obviously if I qualified for it, Id be happy for it, but I suppose it does discourage people having children just for the money. But at least its only from April, so people know about it now before they get pregnant. Everyone thats pregnant now, and entitled to it, will get it.
Bit worried about the school meals.

Can you imagine how many babies are going to be born before April 2011!!! :dohh:! xx

i really dislike the sure start grant anyway! i was entitled to it but i'd rather have not wasted the governments money when i can afford things for my son. Sure it was hard and i had to go to car boots and buy stuff on ebay and put adds on freecycle, but i have been brought up to believe that if you can manage yourself why should others have to pay for you!!!

He didnt mention Child Trust Fund!!!!

hi girls

i was thinking that....as i was wondering about this??

when i registered little man yestreday, there was no child trust fund forms with it like there was with Lewis's in 2008...has it been stopped already or is going to be????

im ok with this budget...it dosent really affect me badly i thought it was going to but it hasnt, think its pretty fair apart from the VAT rise!!!!!

also, council tax being frozen for a year, does that mean we dont pay it for a year or it dosent go up???lol confusion..

£2.50 a day is expensive! Our schools is £1.85. School dinners are much better for the kids, they get 2/3 of their 5 a day in one meal now, instead of maybe 1 portion in a packed lunch. I'd probably spend £1.85 a day anyway on bread, cheese (or whatever filling a veggie can eat on a butty!) piece of fruit. They're not allowed crisps, sweets, chocolate, (although I wouldnt send a bag of haribo in anyway  )

I'm not really sure how I feel about that eitehr! Obviuosly it will stop people having babies coz 'ooh I'll get £500 chucked at me' But at the same time, there are still going to be ppl like me, that find they need it on their 2nd, 3rd whatever child! A couple of months ago I wouldn't have needed it, but now that OH has left, it is going to be a lifesaver for me on my 4th baby!
HB was changed ages ago so that you could only claim for the amount of bedrooms taht you're entitled to? So how do ppl claim for mansions!?

I only get £150 a week, and altho thats apparently worked out on the average prices of 3beds in my area... in real life that is nowhere near enough to be able to rent a 3bed in this area! I've spent the last 6 years with all my 3 children squeezed into 1 bedroom because of this!
Here you get £750 a month for a 3 bed up here, thats still not totally what the rent would be for a decent 3 bed. A 2 bed house in the sticks is £600. A 5 bed is £1200. You wouldnt be able to get a 5 bed for that!

Yes it is! I think its because the school doesn't have a kitchen so gets meals bought in from another school! I do much prefer them coz ,its a lot better than what you can fit in a packed lunch for the same price!

my sister doesnt even get free swimming, and no other school round here offers free swimming... so i dont see that as a huge thing

I didn't know any schools got free swimming!? I pay £9 a week for swimming at school! School dinners would be £37.50 a week for me if there was no free meals!!

we get free swimming in the new forest for under 17s x

so does this mean that child tax credits will go up for SAHM ???

I think child tax credits are going up for anyone on under £40,000 and being reduced for those above. They are taking away the baby element of the tax credits though. (Think that's right..)
