Morning All,

I had my results of my Quad test on Friday and was told that my 'AFP' had returned 'quite high'
I was then told they would retest as my weight hadnt been enterd, and got a call this morning to say that they are still 'slightly elevated'.

I have my scan to 2pm this afternoon, to look at how baby's back is and to see if their are any other problems.

Im petrified!

Has anyone else ever had that result and turned out all was fine with baby?

Any god news storys would be great, but I am also looking for women who have had this scan and found a problem (obviously if you dont want to discus with me then thats ok i completely understand) but i would be intrested in exactly how the scan is performed? How long do they look at baby as its meant to be a 'detailed scan' Can they always find conclusive results?

Thanks everyone, wish me and Bubs luck xx

Hi there, I am currently 31 weeks pregnant and had a high AFP for Spina Bifida. I was called in for a scan that day where they spent about an hour looking at the baby's head, spine, femur length, face, everything basically! At 16 weeks when the scan was performed I was told everything looked fine BUT the high AFP could indicate problems down the line! At 22 weeks I was scanned again and the left ventricle in the baby's head was slightly enlarged (normal being 10mm and my baby's was 11.8mm). This has now resolved and measured at 10.1mm last week, however the baby will need to have an MRI after birth to ensure no neurological damage etc. At 28 weeks the baby was showing 2 weeks behind in growth and at 30 weeks this increased to almost 4 weeks behind as bubs grew literally mm's! Also, the fluid round the baby is low so I am now being scanned twice weekly. I was told that the baby could have a low birth weight and now I have been told I will not get to full term, they are scanning me and basically when the fluid round bubs get to a very low level, or it stops growing totally then I will be delivered! I am not sure if the AFP being high has anything to do with the problems I am having now, although I was told when the results came back that although bubs had no idication of spina bifida, the high result was pointing towards future problems of some sort and that seems to be the case! Although I have been anxious, I can only say I have been very well looked after and been scanned lots since the high AFP to keep monitoring things. Ignorance may be bliss but not for me, I like to know what I'm facing!

Fingers crossed everything will be ok for you, but IF, and its an IF, they do find anything, you will be looked after and monitored carefully! x

Thank you very much for you response! Im so totally nervous!

I really hope that you can get as far along in your pregancy as possible and that baby grows some more for you, and has no problems when born :-)

Thank you very much for sharing your story.. I will update tis evening xxxx

No problem. I will keep you posted and please let us know how you get on. Its difficult not to worry I know but hopefully your mind will be put at ease after your scan. A lot of AFP results can come back as a false high so fingers crossed for you x

I had 3 level 2 scans. My first one for the downs test was done as a level 2 scan - its just routine - we get sent to a specialist office. Luckily that one came back fine for me - but I had to go back at 16 weeks for my anatomy scan. Then they found a previa - so I had to go back at 20 weeks.

The scan is the same as any other - just uses a better machine that shows things more clearly!

Hope all works out for you. Good Luck!

I have level III scans every six weeks. and basically its a like a regular ultrasound visit but longer. sometimes they run for 30 mins to an hour depending if your baby cooperates.
they look at blood flow in the umbilical cord, brain growth, bone length, amniotic fluid, breathing movements...etc.. things that 'normal' ultrasounds dont look at.

i hope everything goes smoothly for you.

I had a level II scan 2 weeks ago as my 16 week blood tests had come back as abnormal (not neessarily high risk but not a normal low risk either). It took about 40 minutes and they checked everything, head size, tummy size, brain, heart, blood flow, arm and leg bone length, top lip, fingers and toes, etc. The scan showed that everything looked fine but i have to go for a level II scan every month now to keep an eye on baby.

As other people have already said, it IS scary, but it is better that your baby is monitorerd and looked after properly.

I'm sure your baby will be fine though hun, just try not to worry (although i know from personal experiance that that is impossible!)

Hope all goes well x x x
