When Luke was born, he would not breastfeed, as much as i wanted to and tried repeatedly he would just end up a purple screaming mess, so as i was in hospital for 6 days, the midwives put him on bottles of ready made sma. We carried on using cartons for a week after getting home, then tried to switch him to sma powder formula. He was fine for a couple of bottles, then started to fuss, spit the milk out, choke, cry and be sick. My health vistior recommended moving to actamil. Again, started on cartons, fine, moved to powder and the problems started again. Our last attempt was cow and gate. He loved the cartons, but same again on normal powder and comfort milk. I can see a difference between the consistancys of the 2, the powder seems so watery. Has anyone else experienced this? x

Yeap, the ready made ones are a lot thicker and creamier, you need to try and mix the two and gradually use less and less ready made to make the transition a little easier.

We did it over the space of about 2 weeks i think!!

how do you ensure your bottles are sterile and ready for the cartons? If you're out can you take a bottle out of the steraliser with teh lid tightly screwed on and take a carton with you? confused!

alex would only drink the cartons and totally refused the powder

we were happy just to use the cartons , he changed over to cows milk no problem
x

Same happened here. We used ready made and tried powder the first month. He hated it! I've compromised and use concentrate. It's liquid in a can that I mix half and half with water. Cheaper than ready made more expensive than powder. Dr suggested I try a powder bottle every couple days to see if he'll take it. He said himself the powder is only popular because it's the cheapest. It doesn't mean it's any better.

Izzy use to have powder (cow and gate) but got fussy - now she has cartons x

I pre made my bottles, sterilised them, add formula and put them in the fridge and just took them out as needed :)

But you could do it the way you said if you wanted to!!

Must be so expensive to just use cartons all the time :(

Yup, it was. Ruby never had powder. Around the 4 month growth spurt it was costing us £15 a week :dohh: But that was through my own choice, I so couldn't be messing about with the powder. We just went without other stuff!

just make up all the bottles once sterilised like you normally would, then take an empty one with you and fill it up from the carton when needed, when theyre assembled they stay sterile - but remember a pair of scissors, theyre hard to open without them  x
