Hi. I have just found out that I am pregnant (possibly about 6 weeks) and am seriously excited! I had a smear test possibly a few days after conception as didn't know I was pregnant. I had been using ovulation sticks but as they had all been negative I told the nurse that I wouldn't be pregnant - however I now think I could have been, if only a few days... My best friend said that in America women do still have their routine smears when they are pregnant, so I am hoping that it is fine. Has this happened to anyone else?

i think my midwife told me to get one after the birth as i have never had one yet (got a bit told off for that oops) they are embarrasing though - the thought of them. yes i know im being stupid:baby:

My best friend had her smears done during pregnancy, they had to, as she had abnormal cells.
Similarily, I get high swabs taken at least every two weeks to check for infection.

Try not to panic, but do mention it to the midwife or doctor. In all seriousness I think you'll be fine.

Hiya, congratulations! :happydance: I asked my midwife about this and she said that there is absolutely no reason not to do the smear test during pregnancy and that it is perfectly safe, but that they just tend not to do so because the cervix is very 'friable' in pregnancy, which just means it tends to bleed easily, and although this is totally harmless to the pregnancy it freaks women out so they try to avoid it. But that's the only thing, so I'd say you have absolutely nothing to worry about :)

Hi, I live in the US and it's routine to have a pap smear in the first trimester here. It's a bit more uncomfortable to have it done when you're pregnant (seems like the cervix is extra sensitive) and you bleed a bit afterwards, so that's pretty nerve wracking. You get another one at your 6 week check up. They say they do that because the cervix changes a bunch during pregnancy, and they like to keep an eye on it or something crazy like that.

Yep I had my smear test at 6 weeks 2 days pregnant with the same doctor that then gave me my first scan. So I would say you're fine ;)

i went to see my doctor when i found out, i was 5weeks and my doctor did a smear test, im from england but now live in austria, it was the 1st smear test iv had, im 22yrs old , my doctor was so shocked that they dont do then im england till your 20's, here they done them frm 17yrs, because as she said you can get cervical cancer as early as 17yrs
