My LO has had on-off red pimple rashes over the past few months. He got one a few weeks ago, I took him to the dr when it didn't clear after a few days of nappy rash treatment and she said it was possibly yeast and prescribed a cream. It cleared a few days after.

Anyway, on Friday, less than 2 weeks after it had cleared the spots came back again. He has lots of faint ones over the skin above his penis, plus a big really red single one on the side of his penis and one big, raised single spot on his scrotum, and this morning a really big single one appeared on the skin between his bottom and scrotum with a horrible whitehead on it.

I took him to the dr again today who examined him and said it was thrush and prescribed cream again.

Does thrush really look like red spots with white-heads?? I've tried looking on google etc. but not much luck.

Also, why does it keep recurring? What's causing it???

I just can't shake off a feeling it's something worse. xx

Hi hun.. what you described sounds exactly like what my DS had recently. I actually posted a pic on here and asked for advice and most ladies thought it looked like thrush. It was the first time he'd had it but it lasted for a total of nearly 5 weeks. the first week we thought it was just a 'normal' diaper rash (although he rarely gets those) and we tried sudocreme, baby power (to keep the area dry), diaper-free time, etc, but it didn't clear up.

We had a telephone consult with our GP who prescribed a cream over the phone and within a few days it started to get better, but we used the cream for almost 2 weeks before 100% of the rash cleared up completely.

It's hard to see in the pic below, but there were lots of 'pimple-like' spots just like you described with white heads around his scrotum. We were advised to wash with a wet cloth with water (instead of baby wipes) and tried to give it plenty of time to air out after baths, etc.

Hope it clears up soon for your DS :flower:

Yes, sounds exactly like the yeast infection my son had recently. he was prescribed Nystatin, which cleared it mostly up within a few days, but took over a week to completely clear up. Then it started to come back a few days after that, so we used the cream again for a few more days. No reoccurences since.

The pediatrician did tell us that it can be hard to clear up, and can reoccur a few times before going away completely. Keep doing what you are doing with the cream and trying to keep it dry.

My newborn has it! She's only 3 weeks old and has had it for 2 weeks! She has been prescribed Nystatin medicine to take orally as they can have thrush in the gut which can cause it in the nappy area.

I have also been using on her bottom (alternating at each nappy change) cider vinegar & water mix, camomile cream, coconut oil, shea & beeswax cream, yoghurt and a natural barrier cream on top. Nothing is working and I'm at my wits end! i am going to go to docs again tomorrow to try and get a cream!

Thank-you, it's just been a recurring issue the past few months and is stressing me out. I just want it all to go back to normal down there :(

so it is normal for it to be a white-head on the spots, and for there to be really big raised spots on their own away from the other spots?? xx

Kate doesn't have any white spots anywhere but does have a cluster of red on her genitals which was individual spot that have now merged and peeled in to a red blotch. She also has small spots on on of her bum cheeks and to larger spots lower down. It just all looks really sore :(

What cream did the docs give you?

My boy and girl have had this at alternating times. My doc said to use regular athlete's foot cream. It worked. Also she said to use is a couple days past when the rash disappears.

Timodine cream the first time and now something with a different name that I'm guessing is the same thing.

My mum keeps telling me not to use it too much though as it can thin their skin?? xx

I'm guessing then that most normal anti-fungals like caneston etc. would work? I think that's where I went wrong, stopping using it straight away after the rash cleared. how many days for it to clear?

Thank-you for attaching the pic, it's helpful to see other cases sometimes. So there were whiteheads on the spots then? From the looks of the pic, his case of thrush was more 'typical' as the rash is mainly around the skin folds of the upper thigh, whereas LO's is on his pubis, penis and scrotum, anyone have this?? xx

Yup, sometimes you don't see the white head because it burts/comes off but that is "classic" thrush. My LO got quite a few single big spots and they got quite nasty as they got rubbed raw by her nappy and then infected (with poo) so keep up with the cream and use it whenever you see anything like it recurring as it is easiest to clear if you hit it early and change LO's nappy much more frequently until it has cleared (nappy free is best if you can manage it).

Ugh been treating all yesterday with the cream and frequent changes, put cream all over before bed last night then changed him this morning to find ANOTHER horrible red white-head had appeared, next to his anus :( Why is another appearing when I'm treating it???

Thrush can be very persistent! Over night LO will have been warmer and wetter in his nappy area and this is what thrush loves.

The thinning skin thing applies to coticosteroids (which can be an ingredient depending on what your doc prescribed - but often they just prescribe the antifungal like clotrimazole) and only with continuous use. My LO has excema and we've had to use some strong steroid creams quite regularily and she's never been at risk of thinning skin according to my GP.

When my doc prescribes thrush cream it is usually only a once or twice a day dosage. If yours can be applied more regularily then maybe it isn't strong enough to attack such a heavy thrush infection?????

He was smothered in a layer of the anti-fungal cream all over though! ugh just freaking out a bit, may take him back to the drs, this new spot looks horrible, has a really clear big whitehead on it :( :( xx

sounds like ellas thrush. we used the cream for a week after it had cleared and give her more water, it came back once but we used the cream. also we used naty nappies/cloth nappies for a little while while it was ad which helped.

So I went back to the GP yesterday (saw a different one) and she said it's thrush too. I hate going to my doctors though, i swear they have a 30-second time limit for each patient :( She said to keep treating it, that sometimes it can take 7-10 days to clear. But on forums etc. everyone seems to say once they got a the cream it was gone within a day or two .

The treatment seems to be making the original spots fade but each morning there seems to be a new horrible big spot appear! DS has a new one above his penis this morning. how can the cream be treating the original spots but still allowing new big ones to appear? Is this normal????? xx

Checked again and a couple of the original spots have now disappeared but a couple of new ones starting to crop up!! What's going on?

I am finding this too! I thought
Kates was slowly clearing but 2 small rashes with lots of tiny white dots have appeared on her thighs! Its stressful and heartbreaking :(

Hmm maybe it's normal then?? The spots on his penis and scrotum (that originally appeared a week ago) have completely healed, cleared and gone now, but a few new ones on his bum, thigh and tummy have appeared despite the fact I am slathering on tons of anti-fungal cream, metanium and changing his nappy every hour (not to mention tons of airing nappy-off time).

But yeah, his skin is still red and sore-looking and new spots appearing butttt the old ones healing and disappearing. Really confused.

PS do the new spots look the same as the ones that cleared? xx

anyone have any experience of this? I'm really really upset and anxious by it so if anyone knows anything about this I'd really appreciate it :flower: xx
