i have been told my amniotic fluid is low and i have to go back in a weeks time to have another scan and check how its doing. Fluid index 7.6cm and deepest pool 3.9cm whatever that means? Anyone help appreciated as i am very worried as only 28 weeks. Thanks everyone.

You should talk to Sequeena - she's been dealing with low amniotic fluid levels as well.

Hey honey I've suffered with Oligohydraminos since 14 weeks. 28 weeks was actually a good AFI for me (you can see al my AFI results in my signature).

There are lots of reason for low amniotic fluid ranging from ruptured membranes to problems with baby but for the most part it's 'just one of those things'. My son continues to grow as he should and is in the 50th percentile, for some reason even though my cervix is now closed and I'm not leaking my body doesn't like to keep much fluid around him

My advice is to NOT PANIC. As hard as it sounds your baby has fluid in there, some babies do not have fluid at all. You can help by resting and drinking lots of water. I was able to increase my AFI by 12cm in one week once. I'm not sure if this was because of drinking the water but it definitely does help even though you'll be on the toilet continuously.

Your baby needs the water so he can drink the fluid and wee out more amniotic fluid. The more water = the more he can make fluid.

You'll have another scan in a week to see how it is and hopefully your AFI will have increased. You will continue to be monitored now for the rest of your pregnancy :hugs:

thanks sequeena. Good to hear from someone who has similar experience. I have been feeling generally more thirsty anyway recently so drinking more and peeing loads! Also pressure on bladder but he was head down at scan so think thats why. Will try and rest and try not to worry myself sick until next monday! Hope things continue well for you. I'll keep you posted.

Keep your feet up ok! Can I ask what led to your scan? Did you think you were leaking?

I'm having my next scan on Monday too, it is a nerve wracking time. The last time I went down to 3cm my lowest pool of measurement was 1cm :( but they will honestly take good care of you and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

It's not a fun time at all, but the best part if you will get to see baby again very soon :flower:

i was due to have a 28 growth scan anyway partly because of a lower than average bmi before pregnancy (i have a very small frame) and also because baby has a balanced translocation which was picked up after cvs procedure at 16 weeks ( hubby has same chromosome pattern so all is well in that respect). All very worrying though isn't it. Will just see how i go day by day i think. He seems to be moving around ok in there this evening which is reassuring.

Ah I see xx

It's amazing what babies can do in there. Remember to keep an eye on your movements and go to hospital if he slows down :hugs:

I came on here to ask about the same thing! I'm 34 weeks, my dr told me that it was at an 8 -which isn't 'too abnormal' for how far along I am, just to drink a lot of water - but it should be between 15-20 right now. 8 seems kind of low to me if it's suppose to be 15. We shall see what they say Thursday when I have my next scan.

I try not to google, but what happens when your fluid gets low? Baby is big and has measured bigger than the week i'm at the whole pregnancy.

Honestly with low fluid we would expect baby to be smaller. My son has always either been bang on for dates or at most 2 weeks ahead. I'm sure baby is absolutely fine in there x

I understand your worry, ive got opposite, too much fluid, my AFI was 26 at 28 weeks, glad to say it come down at 30 week scan to 21, got another scan at 34 weeks but still worried and easier said than done but listen to whit and try not to google, i scared myself silly doing that xxx

If fluid stays low, do they induce earlier? I've already got an induction time, because of GD - they're taking me a week early.

I think it would depend if your fluid stayed low continuously. I know I am not allowed a waterbirth now as I will probably have to be hooked up to machines throughout to keep an eye on baby. My consultant is worried that with the decreased fluid baby won't have the cushion from the fluid so might get distressed from the contractions. The other worry is that each contraction will compress the cord which is baby's life support.

morning everyone. Well, this morning i have had some fluid loss but unsure if its normal discharge or something to worry about. Seems to have stopped now. I phoned my local assesment unit and they told me to monitor it for couple of hours and then phone back. If it was amniotic fluid would it be constant or can it stop and start? Wasn't loads but more than is usual for me and more watery.

With mine it was constant I could feel it coming out  have they given you an internal to make sure you're leaking? They need to find out if there's a risk of infection x

i have just been seen at the hospital. They couldn't see any fluid leaking other than normal discharge. Just got to keep an eye on it until i go back on monday. Thanks for all the advice.
