Sorry if I sound clueless, is it essential to change to follow on milk or is it a marketing ploy? I really dont know. I assume you do go to a milk for 6 months plus. Would you always stick to same manufacturer that you have used for first stage infant milk or do most of you think you will change? I like the look of what Hipp organic do you see. Not sure what to do.

I've wondered about this as well at 6 months solids are introduced because they need more nutrients extra iron etc so do they need the 6 months + milk or as you said is it a marketing thing?

I don't know if I'll buy it for LO...... for those that get healthy start coupons stage 3 milk isn't included just stage 1 and 2 so it makes me wonder whether it is actually needed otherwise a scheme for healthy living would include it in what you can buy with coupons?(if that makes sense lol)

i never changed with the older 2, and doubt very much i will with Lana - if it aint broken, dont try fix it :)

So for example then, would I just go to stage 2 SMA, Lucas currently on SMA gold and it suits him? Sorry to sound such a dunce! lol

I think you can stay on sma gold right through thats what my mum did with us lol

I'll probably stay on cow and gate stage 1 use hungry baby milk if I have to to hold off weaning Im not sure lol play it by ear :)

I read somewhere - may have been on here - that the only reason stage 3 exists is so the companies can advertise to get their name out there... As they are not allowed to advertise stage 1 milk!

This makes a lot of sense to me.. (bloody, profit making bigwigs... grrr!)

Like somebody said, it is supposed to contain more iron and other minerals because a babies supply starts dwindling around 6 months, but this is when they start eating proper food anyway, and apparently iron etc is much easier for the baby to extract from food than formula!

So, in my opinion, if your LO is happy on stage 1, then there shouldn't be any need to change milk at all, till 1 year, when they can have cow's milk.

The only benefit I guess is it may be cheaper as they are allowed to have offers on follow on milk!

Up to you! xx

I asked the health visitor and she said it LO is happy then there is nothing to be gained by changing. We are on SMA and their follow on milk goes from 12 months not 6 anyway and I plan to swich to full fat cows milk at 12 months. The follow on milk is sometimes cheaper and on offer though whereas stage one cant be.

My two started off on Cow and Gate Stage 1 and I switched them to C&G Stage 3 at 6 months. I don't know why tbh - i just thought that was what u were sposed to do but after reading some of the comments here, obviously not lol. The change never affected my LO's though and like someone else said, I sometimes get money-off coupons and special offers for the Stage 3 so they're happy, I'm happy and everybody's happy lol

I'm sticking to my cow and gate comfort stage 1 milk - it is the only one that agrees with her.

I think follow on has more iron which they need and you get clubcard/nectar points on follow on milk.

Omar's formula is frm birth-12 mnths. He's on aptamil anti reflux formula. So if this one is suitable for 6+ mnths, all formulas should be the same. I think the stages r only for adv porposes.

I'm not sure yet. Follow on milk is unnecessary- after all stage 1 has added iron too and too much iron is not good what with constipation etc. Then again like people have said it can be put on special offer and you can get advantage points on it etc and every little helps as they say! Will have to decide nearer the time.

I'm sticking with SMA 1 - couple of reasons. When he was 8 weeks I tried him on Hungry baby and it really didn't agree with him so I don't want to go through that again. Also, they're completely unnecessary (marketing ploy completely), and by the time he's 9 months he should only be on 3-4 bottles a day so the cost will be half what it is now anyway so any money off isn't worth it. Same with toddler milk, although I will probably use toddler milk if we go anywhere out and about as it's easier to transport in the small cartons than cows milk. Purely for convenience lol. But then again I'm a lazy sod! :haha:

We moved Imi on to 6 month+ milk when she was about 7 months, never thought not to TBH and it def wasn't because of advertising. It has hardened her poo a little which is great for us (cloth nappies) and i also recently found out we get boots points which is also a bonus x

HiPP Organic follow on milk is a little cheaper I've noticed, so I might give it a go and if it suits her then I'll switch over. If not we'll carry on with the stage 1!

I asked about mixing DD's formula [EleCare] at higher calories per ounce[right now 20 calories but can be mixed up to 30 calories an ounce] as her formula doesn't have a stage 2. She said since DD is content and gaining well we'll leave her at it past 1 year since she won't be getting milk.

I read somewhere - may have been on here - that the only reason stage 3 exists is so the companies can advertise to get their name out there... As they are not allowed to advertise stage 1 milk!

This makes a lot of sense to me.. (bloody, profit making bigwigs... grrr!)

My midwife told me this, she also said that technically babies dont need the extra iron from the follow on milk because too much can be bad for them. Think im gunna stick will stage 1, and go onto hungry baby milk if i need too!
xxx

I think I'll go onto the Aptamil follow on milk, I think you can use it from 6 months. They are more likely to be on offer in Boots and also I'll be able to get advantage points for it!

I switched from Aptamil stage 1 to Cow & Gate stage 3 when Emma was 6 months. I switched brands because I found the Aptamil stage 3 a little grainy, it didn't seem to mix that well. Plus, when I compared ingredients, they were exactly the same. The only difference is that C&G is cheaper!!

I also use C&G Goodnight Milk. Not sure if it actually helps with Emma's sleeping but she likes it so I've stuck with it.

The extra Nectar points also help :)

We switched Evie to Aptamil follow on a few days ago because she'd lost interest in her milk. It was more out of desperation than anything else as it was becoming difficult to get the minimum recommended amount into her! Since switching she's back up to around 22oz per day instead of 12-15 that she was having last week  Of course it could just be coincidence but I wont be changing it back anytime soon!
