Hi, I was just curious if anyone is using a midwife in the United States. From what I read on here, they are the norm in the UK. I live in NC, and just found out that midwifery is illegal here! However, I live close to the SC border, where it is legal.

Anyone else thinking of going with a midwife/home birth?

A certified nurse midwife (masters degree) is legal in every state and licensed in the state and usually have right to deliver in a hospital. They usually don't deliver in homes though because they pay medical malpractice just like a doctor would and the risk is just too high in a home birth setting.

I considered getting a certified nurse midwife here but can't now that I'm considered high risk.

Thanks, Vineyard! I'm going to look into that too.

They are usually employed in Ob-Gyn offices.
