My husband and I started trying for a baby last May and tried for 5 months without success.

Since then, I have been having a lot of problems with my knee, to the extent that I cannot stand for long or walk very far so have had to put TTC on hold whilst trying physio and I may potentially have to have surgery in a few months time. Even that isn't guaranteed to work and so I feel very frustrated as I am 30 and in every other way my husband and I are so ready to try for a baby!

Pregnancy would be likely to make my knee problems worse (due to the extra weight and the release of the hormone relaxin which relaxes your ligaments etc) and I don't want my knee to be giving way when I'm pregnant and I want to be able to take care of my baby properly-hence needing to wait.

I just feel so frustrated because I don't know when (or even if) my knee will get better and I desperately want to have children.

Just wondered whether anyone is in a similar situation or has been in the past?

Not a knee problem for me. We are waiting because of my job. I breath in a lot of toxins during the day so we have an appointment with a specialist April 21st. As long as he gives the go ahead we will be trying as of that day, unless he wants to run blood work and stuff then whenever we get results back.

I've been waiting for that appointment since early November, can't come soon enough!

I had knew problems before having my first baby but it wasn't too bad so didn't affect TTC then. After having my first, I decided to get my knee looked at as it was getting worse and ended up having surgery. We put off TTC by 2 months because of the operation, but didn't want to wait much longer and I found out I was pregnant 5 weeks after the op. I thought pregnancy would make my knee worse for the reasons that you gave, but strangely it seemed to ease during pregnancy both times. Getting pregnancy so soon after the operation made the physio required for recovery a bit more difficult though as some of the exercises pulled on my stomach and I ended up with a lot of stomach muscle separation by the time no.2 was born. I would like a third, but have decided to have a slightly longer gap this time, partly to give me chance to focus on both leg and stomach exercises to try to improve both issues before another baby.

I hope you can get an operation sorted soon if it's required so that your plans aren't delayed too much because of it.

Hope everything goes well at the specialist appointment and you get the ok to go ahead. What job do you do out of interest?

Thanks for your post-it is very interesting to hear of your experiences and good to hear that pregnancy doesn't inevitably mean knees issues getting worse. What problems do you have with your knee if you don't mind sharing? I have trochlear dysplasia and a tilted kneecap which has led to patellofemoral arthritis.

I don't really know what the conditions are that you have described but it sounds like your symptoms are more extreme than mine were so I can definitely understand why you'd want it sorting properly before TTC.

My knee developed multiple clicks with every step, which initially was just painful when going up or down stairs but gradually got to the point that it twinged with pain every time I straightened my leg, and remained achy for a while after walking. Scans etc couldn't confirm the cause, so I had keyhole surgery to investigate. Apparently there is a fatty pad behind the knee cap that had become inflamed (possibly from one initial injury) and was getting trapped below my kneecap with every step. This gradually made the inflammation worse and then more would get trapped, hence why it gradually just got worse. The surgeon removed a chunk of this fatty pad and that should have solved the problem. It no longer hurts with every step or aches in general, but going downstairs is now possibly worse than before. It gets to a point when bending, where it just seems to have no strength any more and gives way. I therefore never use that leg to take my weight when coming downstairs if I'm carrying the kids. I'm hoping it will continue to gain strength if I keep going with the leg exercises but I don't expect it to ever be quite right again. And now my other knee has started clicking too..... :-(

I have big knee issues and also have other joint problems I didn't find the pregnancy too bad for my joints until I got spd but even then that wasn't too bad for the most part, pregnancy will be different for each person but I would recommend getting physio asap if u start getting issues, go to someone specifically for pregnant ladies
