Anyones midwife NOT listen to HB at 16weeks!!!

Hi feeling confused and upset today

It was my 16wk app with midwife and I was expecting her to listen to babies HB today,but she didint and when I asked why not she said they dont listen to HB till my next app which is @26weeks and after my 20weeks scan and also as this is my 3rd baby I dont get seen as many times as first time mum to be

I also got my bloods taken today for the downs/spine blood test and she said because of my age 37 I was a slighter greater risk and now im wondering if the reason im not getting to hear baby HB is because they are waiting to see how the blood results and 20week scan goes, in other words im feeling that they are thinking its not worth it till afterwards!!!

I just dont understand why I couldnt get to hear babies HB regardless of when its my next scan or results or what ever!!!

Im actually sitting here breaking my heart,I feel as though they think or know something is wrong and they cant be bothered with me or my baby!!!

Also i didnt realise how much getting my bloods taken for that test would also affect me,Im usually a very level headed person but since this whole midwife app I have been feeling very emotional and drained

All I wanted was to hear babies HB,now I have to wait till Im almost half way through my bloody pregnancy to hear baby HB

Hi Hun, don't worry. I didn't hear heartbeat until well after 20 wks.

16 weeks is very early to listen in as the baby is still quite low. I think the reason some MW don't listen is that they don't want to worry M2B if they can't find the heartbeat. Even when I had a listen in at 22 weeks, my doctor took ages to find HB!

Hi hun they dont listen for it now before 20wks as they cant always find it coz bubba is tiny and could be hiding anywhere in there and as a consequence of not finding it mummy gets stressed and worried, so dont worry its the routine now.

had my 16 week app yesterday , she wouldnt listen to the heartbeat as it is thei "policy" not to do it till20 weeks, however like you this is my 3rd baby so i dont get an appointment till im 28 weeks now.
aslo had my bloods done and have felt drained too .. its like i could have wrote your post myself lol .

I got to hear mine at 16 weeks, although she said not to panic if it couldn't be found straight away.

I haven't heard the HB either. I've heard you get too listen around 25wks.
But I'm sure in some book I read it did say I would get to listen at 16wks so when I had that appt I was really looking forward to hearing it. ANd then i had it and she never mentioned it, and I forgot to ask. x

They didn't listen for a heartbeat at my 16wk scan either luv, I asked the midwife about it but she just said they don't normally because it's too early. I left feeling upset too because I was so looking forward to it.

It was a relief to see her hb thrumming away on the screen when I had my next scan but I still haven't actually heard it. I'm hoping that my midwife will have a listen at my 25wk appointment.

I honestly cant believe how today has affected me,my last pregnancy was 5yrs ago,so not too long ago, but I honestly dont remember feeling like this last time (I think I was quite naive last two times as not much information out their but now with the Internet,its a good place for info but also a bad place for info if that makes sense lol)and i was so sure i had heard baby's HB before almost 3rd tri lol,but thank god its not just me not hearing HB, was feeling very paranoid so thank you to all you ladies for putting my mind at ease,just need to wait now for these bloody test results to come through!!!

they don't usually listen for the heartbeat before 20 weeks as some women seriously panic and overreact (as i guess its very easy to do) when they don't hear it yet its very hard to hear in some people before this time.

if they tried to hear the hb and couldnt then millions of women would be flooding into the hospitals wanting to make sure their babies are ok

Its amazing how quick that weight has lifted off my shoulder,I can wriggle them again lol

probably also not helped today the fact that my husband left for abroad this morning for work,so not been able to talk to him properly about today events

really? Here in the states they try at the 12 week appt, they can't always hear it (we didn't hear mine) so if you don't you get a little sneak peek scan. They listened at my 16 week one as well and im assuming they will to all of them coming...

i had my 16 week app last week and she took bloods for downs/spina bifida and listened to the HB...she did say not to worry if she couldnt find it but it popped up right away thankfully x

I really wonder why though because the Doc at hospital told me they wouldn't hear it so I rented a dopper and sometimes it is hard to find but I always do.

my consultant listened to the HB when i went on monday, but tbh (and it might sound mad to say this about a consultant) im convinced it was my HB he picked up.
i say this because he only listened to 2 or 3 beats and stopped, and he put it in the exact place i tried when i hired a doppler this week and it sounded exactly the same, but I know it was my HB i picked up on when i did it because i had an LCD display and it was way too low to be babys.
i was hoping the MW would listen at my 16 wk appt for reassurance (as i couldnt find it myself with the doppler) but i would be in a worst state if she couldnt find it, so i wont mind that much if she doesnt do it

My midiwfe didn't listen at the 16 week and I just though oh she'll probably have a listen at the next one but my 22 week came and went and she didn't try and listen then or even mention it for the next appointment! Whereas a friend of mine who is pregnant and seeing a midwife down in Lincolnshire, her midwife has listened to the heartbeat at every appointment since and including 16 weeks so maybe just depends entirely on where you go?

All I can say is I'm glad I have my doppler!!

my midwife hasnt listerned to babys hb either xx this is also my third baby and my midwife has said although i dont have to see her as much i can choose to see her if i want x for instance i dont offically have to see her till 28 weeks but i have an appointment at 25 weeks x

I'm with you Cerrie....in the states it's very different. HB at 12wks and we are seen every 4wks until the end and then we are seen every 2wks or every week until birth. Gender scan is normally between 18 and 20wks. At my last appt, I was 13wks, the Dr didn't even attempt to listen with the doppler. She just rolled the scanner next to the bed and did a quick ultrasound. No measurements or anything like that. She just checked in on bean and saw a super active baby with a great HB. I would probably be a mess if I didn't hear the HB each time!!! But I am also a serious worry wart.

im guessing that might of been it hopeful, but after warning u not to get into a state if u couldnt find the HB i was a wreck, so sent it back the following day! x
