This is what my doctor and HV AND MW said? I have had LO on Aptamil and EBM. She seems fine with this combination.

BUT, i have tried researching this whole statement-Aptamil is closest.....

I can't find ANY evidence to support this.

Secondly, my friend has her LO on Cow and Gate. i compared the ready to feed carton ingredients list. Apart from one constituent of fat (LCPs) they are IDENTICAL!!!!

So why have i been told all this stuff????

Is it just marketing? The price difference is quite marked.

Anyone have any research?

I don't know about the research but from experience I would say that Aptamil is closest to BM in taste (yes I tasted my own BM  ), smell, consistency (other milks seem so much thicker and darker) and it definitely reacts to baby's tummy in the same way ... Aptamil poo is just like BF babies' poo in colour, consistency and smell

Sorry not to be able to be more scientific :dohh::flower:

hipp organic is the same and they claim to be cloest to breastmilk

the milk is very thin and not thick like others

its just personal choice on milk i spent hours researching it an found hipp organic ticked all the boxes for us x

I would definetly agree with that with experience of my own LOs poos:flower:

Aptamil and cow and gate are made by the same people and are said to be very similar but they are different.

Its a very clever marketing myth. I was reading that the makers of aptimil give £1000 grants to midwives and this "information" kind of sneaks in and has stuck. It's not true at all.
(I was told this too, when LO was on it in NICU)
Apparently, price should be as good a guide as any as they are all very similar in makeup, just that some taste slightly different (so lo's might prefer one over another for that reason) - more pricey is not 'better' (and aptamil is one of the priciest) or 'closer to breastmilk' than the next brand.
HTH!

I would say from taste that HIPP is closer to brest milk - it is more to do with the runny consistency (sp? I can't spell, I am ill...!).
SMA is quite thick and almost greasy (my LO is on staydown and that is very thick and slime like).
Personally I think it is clever marketing - it never will be breastmilk! x

Nonsense! One of the biggest myths going!

And the people who are saying it tastes similar? Doesn't breastmilk taste different according to what mum has eaten anyway?

Thanks for all the replies. Shocking that the makers of Aptamil bribe the NHS to support it. My LO really does not seem to notice much difference between the Aptamil and EBM, nor does her gut it seems.

Just that we started her on it as that is what we were told and then assumed it was so much more expensive than other brands because it WAS better.

Feel like i have fallen for a scam. But, LO is happy so i wont change now. I just wish i could have made my own decision based on my own research when we first started using formula.

Try not to worry ... if she likes it (although it is pricier) and it suits her system then its the right decision isnt it! Even if you had researched it you might have chosen it anyway :) From what I understand as long as they tolerate a brand then it doesn't matter too much which brand :)

It is quite shocking (but not surprising - it goes on all the time, with drug companies mainly) I think they (Danone - they also own cow and gate I think) fund research by midwives with these grants, or something like that, but then that means their name, the aptamil logo etc, gets plastered everywhere, the hp's get free stuff with logos etc on it, the subtle message (which might be something like 'many parents who use our products say it close to breastmilk', which then gets twisted and sticks) gets into the health system. Very clever on their part!
As well as that, they used to claim it quite blatantly until the ASA cracked down on such claims as they were totally untrue. A bit like the nonsense mascara / shampoo ads with the wierd pseudo-scientific language that's actually b****cks :)

I am glad you said that cos my baby is on Aptimil (older baby was on sma) and I was getting a bit concerned about the poo being a bit more runny and lighter this time round but what you said about the consistency etc explains a lot!

We tried several formulas until we settled with Aptamil. I didnt BF, but when I compared DS poo when he was tiny with his cousin's who is exclusively BF it was similar. When he was taking other formulas his poo was hard, green & too smelly.

I dont think there is a formula closest to BM. It depends on the LO's system.

Most drug companies, formula companies etc will give samples etc to get doctors, nurses etc to encourage the use of their product. I think most formulas out there will claim closer to BM - because it's something that sells.

I have read there is no formula that is 'closest to breastmilk' all are virtually the same in ingredients. Taste wise there may be some that are more similar.

Aptamil isn't even sold on this side of the world! Never heard of it until I came here.

We dont have it here either....wonder what would be the most similar formula to it here

I know Good Start is said to give BM like baby poop and many mothers swear by it being closer to breast milk. DD projectile vomited it so we switched to another brand of milk based.

In the UK the marketing laws regarding infant formula are very strict, outright advertising has been banned since 1996, but the companies get around them by doing these 'new baby clubs', helplines, and also marketing to midwives and other medical professionals. Two of my boys needed formula at some point but I find this kind of sneaky marketing tactics quite sickening. All formula brands claim to be closest to breastmilk, even SMA these days but scientifically there is no basis for the claims and most of the big formula brands have had to change their packaging several times because of false claims on it.

Who knows? All I know is my LO has not had any differences in the poop department since we switched, his poop is still quite runny and yellow. Although it stinks a lot worse!!!
