are u giving sugar water to ur baby?

ive been told this to,to get rid of his hick ups. never taken my fancy though as it cant be healthy. id much prefer to stick him on my boob for 5 mins for a drink to get rid of them.

My FIL told me to give her sugar water to "fill her up for longer".

It used to get used for constipation but now they say if baby is really constipated add a tiny bit of fresh oj/prune juice in water. If constipation continues then doctor tends to prescribe lactulose x

the nurses gave this to my LO in the NICU when he got his needles and IVs, it distracted him and he never cried. I also him some before his 2 month needles, again, never cried.
You only give less that 1 ml. and obviously not just whenever you please, its only given before painful procedures.

Exactly what I was going to say :flower: Daisy had it for IVs and a lumber puncture.

definitely not given just as a matter of routine - only in exceptional circumstances and then only a tiny bit - but it's a quite 'old' thing that used to be used frequently  probably some (older) people still think it's used.
Definitely no need otherwise! They don't (generally) need anything other than their usual milk at that age.
Amazing how some of these things get passed around and told to mums as factual! :)

My LO did get it once in the NICU and then the nurse realised he wasn't meant to get his bloodwork done for another hour .. lucky bugger gettiing a free treat

Some older people take me mad, no wonder 3 year olds are having their teeth extracted!

Doesn't too much sugar also cause worms?

I haven't... and was so mad when Jacob's nanny did when he was a baby once! I don't think it should be done anyways.

Its a remedy for constipation - works a treat. But there is no point in giving it unless its needed
Its also used as a pain reliever in paeds units (well sucrose is) - and it works.

Nope but did in past with my other two babies and it never did them any harm!

Must admit,i did twice and help with constipation because she was in so much pain and i had tried everything and it wasn't working so my doctor recommended this. Both times she had gone within 10 minutes of giving it.
I would rather of gave her it the twice to get her out of her misery tbh x

LO had sugar water once when in hospital it was a combination of trying to replenish energy and such quickly and as a distraction when he was having needles put into the back of his hand.
My god did he cr*p for England the next day :) silly nurse put a size 4 nappy on a 5 week old and add to that it weighing about 2 Lbs in poop, not pretty when the dr picked him up and it fell off :)

And no I didnt leav him sitting in a dirty nappy his bum just suddenly exploded.

i have heard it as a ridiculous way to get a baby to sleep thru - ie if a baby wakes up for milk during the night, give a bottle of sugar water - baby will soon "learn" not to bother waking as they dont get their milk..

Only if your making it up with water straight from a river or somthing :)

Ive used it wit my other two children and they had perfect teeth and were perfect weights, feeders etc. I only used it when constipation was bad and needed the quick fix, lactulose takes days to work and isnt orange juice worse.

I put a tiny amount in cool boiled water and they took about an ounce.

Ollie takes about an ounce of water a day to help with reflux and constipation caused by the milk and he is fine !

Yes its an old wives tale but sometimes the old wives tales are the best.
