Are you gonna ask people to wash hands before holding baby?

Definitely not, baby needs to build up his immune system.

If anyone smokes then yes, but when William was little people washed them anyway before handling him I didnt have to ask. I always have one of them little bottle of hand wash the anti bac ones on me when william was born.

Defo if they are smokers....basically cos i know my mum always stinks!
Would you like big stinky smoky hands on your face?! YUK

I asked everyone to when i had Grace and i will be asking this time to. I always go and wash my hands when i visit a newborn and most people that visited Grace washed without being asked first xx

No i won't, i won't be washing mine every time i pick lo up, i think it's a bit excessive unless there is a medical need.

Snap! And I think my friends/family would be highly offended if I told them to.

I will be honest, my parents smoke & that does bother me when we're at their house, but it's there house & they are my parents.......... They bought me & my siblings up & "we're all fine, so can't see what the fuss is all about"

So I do see things from their perspective (although I cannot stand it!)

no, I won't be, I think it's over the top really.
I can understand if baby is premature or if there are specific health worries, but otherwise no. Of course, if someone has a nasty illness then that's different also, but just for day to day then no.

honestly, when baby is here your instincts will scream out what to do....

mine screamed out to get people to wash their hands first, didnt care if people took offence, MY baby, she is precious and tiny and for the sake of 20 secs to wash their hand I felt ALOT more comfortable....Abigail was a February baby and there were colds flying about all over the place....

Yes, I wanted her to get used to germs, but not harmful germs....they can still be exposed to friendly bacteria without people bringing it into the house from outside!

I HATE the smell of smoke and i think i might faint if a smoker comes up and handles her with out washing there hands i swear the smell takes my breathe away i can image how bubz is gonna feel! no one smokes in either family that im aware of and if im being a bit over the top that fine by me i cant help it! im a first time mommy so can be a bit dramatic if i want too! lol:haha:

what im really worried about is ppl Kissing her!

We ask people to use the hand gel and usually they respect our wishes. OH's grandparents refused saying their hands arent dirty dont be silly :saywhat: shes MY baby and you will do what I want or you wont hold her... end of!!!!!

Now she is 7 months we arent as keen for people to do it but still expect people to if we ask them to xxx

OH you are my twin! i know i sound a bit of my rocker but i always will keep her car seat cover up (out in public)bc ppl are just so brave these days coming up and touching ur baby! like HELLO who the hell are you?! i dont know u! stop leaning over to poke at my baby! hahaha and why do ppl think its okay to kiss some one else's baby? would u go up and kiss there 12yr old?! lol i feel my blood pressure getting high just thinking about it.

lol nooo noo unless they have been sneezing in their hands or have an obvious cold or summit i really dont think tis necerssary you cant wrap them up in a bubble im sure their immune system is good enough to handel the odd hand germ

Yes especially family and friends I know that smoke. If they come in smelling like an ash tray also they will not be holding or touching her. I am obsessive with washing my own hands so if they want to touch my baby they can have clean hands. I know baby has to build up their immune system but I think there's enough bacteria and viruses in the air to add the extra ones on peoples hands too...especially those that never wash hands after using the loo...and you will be surprised at the amount of people that don't!!! X

asking family to wash their hands is one thing, but wait until you get strange wierdos coming up to you when babys in the pram and grabbing her hands! for me its the worst thing ever!

i will be asking people to wash their hands too, I did with my first, and i will with this one. Especially having a winter baby, there are always more germs going around. Im so nervous for Christmas, my sister in laws kids are ALWAYS sick and I dont want the baby catching anything :s

I had everyone either wash their hands or use hand sanitizer before holding Haley until she got her 2 month shots...I'm just now lightening up but if there are several people wanting to hold her in a row then they must use hand sanitizer at the least or I will flip. Just good practice. Not saying I never want to expose her to germs, but little by little. Not all at once. But like someone else said, its probably from my experience having a NICU baby.

and why is it that people say just after smoking??? how many times a day do you touch your own face, or mouth, or ear, or God knows what else without realizing it? Why would you want that from a stranger all over your baby? I'm just now getting to where I dont use the sanitizer everytime I pick Haley up, but I definitely always wash (not sanitize, wash, hot water and soap lol) after every diaper change and before I prep any bottles. Cigarette smoke is bad, but JIMO so is every Joe Blow's everyday germs. It's not unreasonable to ask people to sanitize. And if someone has something to say about it, F*ck them lol Its your baby and if they want to hold YOUR baby then they will comply with your wishes. Plain and simple.

:hugs: O i SO AGREE! you have no idea what ppl touch before they come over and ask to hold ur LO!
EDIT-
I think its Common courtesy to Wash your hands before handling anyones baby.

I honestly think most people would not consider holding a newborn baby if they knew their hands weren't clean. You can't protect them from every germ and nor would I want to. I've never been asked to wash my hands or use hand gel before holding a baby. The risk of protecting a new baby too much is that once they start moving around and you have less control over what contact they have they'll be ill all the time. I could understand more caution if there were specific health concerns and if people were smokers. To be honest I'm a health care professional and I loath hand gel - I've seen what it does to your hands after prolonged use. Much rather wash my hands.
