assisted conception - very new to this!

i've not long been trying to conceive, but after my little bean did not stick, i ended up reading all about how are cycles work. i think i must have missed the class where they explained this in school!! i realised, that since i have only had 3 periods in the last 2 years, my chances of getting pg are, well, pretty low.

so i saw my GP today, and she has ordered LOADS of blood tests, the ones i can remember off the top of my head are FSH, TSH, liver and kidney function, prolactin, and a few others that I have forgotten. she talked a bit about PCOS, and said that if my infrequent periods are the 'normal kind' of abnormal, then she can give me a medication to force my period to come, and then give me a different medication to take for 5 days which will force my ovaries to release an egg.

can anyone translate this into words that i can google, like what those medications are, and what the 'normal kind' of abnormal is? does she mean if i test positive for PCOS?

I'd guess that the drug she will put you on to bring on your period would be "provera" and the drug to stimulate your ovaries would be "clomid". I'd also guess that from this, she suspects you may have PCOS.

If it is PCOS, she may try you on Metformin, but from what you've said it sounds like Clomid. It's unusual for them to go straight for that tbh, and GP's can't usually prescribe it... but you never know. Good luck!

When she says a "normal kind of abnormal", she definitely means that although it is abnormal not to have a normal cycle, it is also a totally common occurrence. Just by looking around this board, you will see TONS of ladies that do not ovulate regularly or have regular cycles. :wave: This girlie included.

Sounds like she wants to put you on Clomid but it is good that she is doing all kind of blood work to make sure that there is not another underlying condition causing the problem. (I.E. - Thyroid, etc.)

If she puts you on Clomid, be sure to ask your doctor how you are going to monitor your ovulation. I have ultrasounds every month with my doc to see if there is a follicle. Others use OPK's or have day 21 blood tests done.
