At what age?

Did you drop the bar down on the cot, so your lo could get out on their own?


I have the stokke cot, it says from 18months you can take away one of the sides, so they can get in and out..

He's 15 months now, I don't know how different he will be at 18 months, to allow him out and play in his room..Is 18 months too young?

It really varies from child to child - no way could I have done that with DS at 15 or 18 months! Not if I ever wanted him to sleep in his bed....

We plan to do it when we get back from holiday and he is settled again (we are going to the West Coast and Mid-West of the US, so a 7/8 hour time difference). So he will be about 25 months when we take the side off. I THINK that by then I will be able to convince him to stay in bed. If not, then there may be a bit of a struggle... But he has been able to climb out of his cot since 18 months (although not with his sleeping bag on, yet....), so we really need to get on and tackle it.

Never. Jasper crawled out on his own (bar up) when he was over 2 years....never dropped the bar though. I, personally, wouldn't.

Are you talking about drop side cribs? In the US it is illegal to buy, sell, or donate them as of last year. I am just curious.

We just took the sides off DS's cot 3 weeks ago & he is now in a cot bed. He loves it. I'd wait till they're a little older maybe and get a bed x

LO has recently started to sleep badly in her cot so we're debating taking the side down.

My friend removed the side of her LO's cot when her LO was capable of climbing in and out on her own and walking around. My LO didn't walk until 16 months so couldn't have done it before then, even now she's wobby when tired.

We're hoping that we can last till we move in May, then she will be 2 and will go straight into her big girls bed. New house, new room, new bed. Get it over with all at once.

If her sleep gets worse beforehand then we'll just take the side of her cot off.

I think if it's not broken, don't fix it, so if he's happy in the cot with the side up, leave him there for as long as possible cos all he'll do if you remove it is keep coming in to you.

I have never seen a cot/bed like that before! how cool! But to answer your question- i would wait until you think your LO is ready, rather than what age they state. My LO will be 2 in 2 months and i've still got the bar up x

both my girls were fine in their cots till they were 2 & 1/2 , then I moved them into their own beds with no pros - both had drop down cots & I never dared drop the sides all that time cept to get them in/ out of the cot. I never had issues with them trying to get out on their own - only jumping in their cot...

i wanted one of those when i was pregnant they r fab aint they only we got a cotbed instead lol.

we took the sides off at 18 months lo refused to go in her cot we did not like her cot bed as a bed so got her a todller bed instead at 19 months.

i would say your lo will let you know when they r ready mine did she was alot younger than i wanted her 2 go into a bed but u have to just go with whats best for the child.

u can still buy them in the uk ive seen them not manny about now but u defo can still buy em

We took the side off Tom's cot at 19 months because he was sleeping really badly in a sleeping bag and I didn't want to use a duvet with him with the enclosed cot. He was fine - we had a few problems with him getting out on the first night but he never, ever gets out of bed now. He even lies in it in the morning and waits for us to go into the room.

Wildfire, its not a drop down side, I think the whole side comes off, but its curved, so the too ends are still enclosed..

I do think that if I took the side off now then he would be up quite a lot playing with his toys, or potentially wondering around the house, but obviously he's still very little. I can't see how he will change in a few months, which is why it got me thinking why it said to convert at 18 months?! What kind of signs should I look for to know when he's ready to move out of the cot?
To me, and I know it sounds silly, but its kind of like another milestone, moving from cot to bed, no longer a little baby anymore, so I don't mind him staying in the cot for a good while yet!

my neice started climbing out of her cot so she had to go into a bed for safty.
my lo just refused to go inot her cot it was like all of a sudden she became scaired of the bars like she felt trapped it happend just over night it was strange. oh said lets turn in inot a bed i was like no not yet wait till shes 2, but after a week of her being like that i agreed to 1 side off the cot and she changed instantly then we converted the whole cot and i hated it as a bed so went out got a todler bed.

u wont have 2 change that bed as thats stunning and looks verry safe.

so it scaired me and i got a none drope side cotbed lol.

but i was in a dropside cot and im fine lol

I can't believe all these things. We have used a drop side cot for 4 years now and neither of my two have even tried to move it. I'd be lost without the drop capacity-as I'm so short I physically wouldn't be able to change the sheet o the mattress.




The answer the OP. Daniel was 13 months as he mastered the art of climbing out. Esther is 27 months and still in the cot. I wouldn't be in any hurry to move lo out unless they were climbing out themselves anyway.

I just have images of him stacking up his teddies so he can climb out! He's way to stumpy to climb out of the cot, for now anyway, although he almost climbed out of the bath tonight!!
