DH is set on a particular name for our son but a close relatives dog has the shortened version of this name. Would this put you off? I like the name too but cant bear the thought of people asking if we had named him after the dog (and they will)

If the relative is close & someone you see a fair bit then it would put me off big time, but if the relative wasn't that close in distance or relationship then i might.

Ie.. i like ruby for a girl but our family dog was ruby so wouldn't use
I fostered a dog called Millie once, & yes i would use this for a girl.
My auntie had a dog called poppy & yep i'd use that .

There are a surprising lot of names I've considered for the baby but have discarded because I know/interact with dogs with those names often enough that it'd be too weird to use for my kiddo.

I've got the same problem, my mil has just named her dog the name we wanted if we have a litle girl! its really upset me cause she knew we loved the name last time round but had a boy!!! my dh has said sod it we'll use it anyway but i don't think i'll be happy now.
problem is its the only girls name i want so unless we have a boy im stuck!!!

Bailey, that would make me nuts! How inconsiderate!

As to the original question, yes, it would bother me. I've been careful not to name any of the (many) pets we foster names that I like for kids so that I don't end up limiting myself.

Personally, no, Before we knew we were having a boy, we'd alraedy decided on a girls name, we decided it about a month after we started going out, let alone getting married and TTC'ing! Earlier this year, right about the time I fell pregnant, my parents got a new puppy and named her our pick of daughters names. So this is a dog that we'd be seeing often and our child would have a lot of interaction with. To us it wasn't going to matter, we LOVE our girls choice and would have used it regardless. As it turns out we're having a boy so its not an issue right now but if we have a girl next time around, we'll still use that name.

I guess it depends on how much you both LOVE it, and if you can find another one that you love just as much.

I know what you mean - if we have a girl we really want to call her Zara - as
a) this was where we first met - outside the store on a blind date
b) the name means - brightness of Dawn - and my name is Dawn

The only problem is that my parents dog is called Zara aswell and so I know my parents will constantly say we named it after their dog :( BUT they do live 200 miles away so it's not like we see them all the time and nobody where we live now knows about my parents dog so it will only be family who do. Also Zara the dog is now about 6 years old and sad as it is she probably won't live too many years longer so it will only really be an issue for another couple of years or so.

So if baby is a girl then she will be called Zara and I will just have to put up with the flack as the name means too much to us just to discard because of my parents dog :)

I'm not sure. It depends on the name and what the short version is and if it's the only and most obvious shortened version.

For example, my parents had a dog named Bob for fourteen years. He died right before Joseph was born and then when we had the baby and called him Joseph Robert my nephew said "did you pick Robert because of Bob?"

Well no we didn't but it hasn't put me off. Robert can also be Robbie, Rob or Bert as well as Bob so it wasn't like, I don't know, Steve and Steven, I can't think of any other names for them. And of course it is his middle name, I might have been more bothered if it was his first name.

well, i think my cousin once had a dog called Jago, but we like it too much to matter, she no longer has the dog so it's not really a problem

if the pet has a shortened version of the name then i can't see that being too much of a problem and i'd still use it, unless that's the nickname that your baby will known by as it could get a tad confusing! but i'd still stick with it

I think its lovely that the name has special meaning for you & your OH

(and especially seeing you live so far away from your parents I dont see it being an issue)

I think you should go ahead and use the name you love :hugs: xx

Me too! My sister kept suggesting really nice names that just reminded me of people's dogs, but I would definitely have considered them otherwise x

Well my cat is a rescue cat and she has the same name as me! We call her Jessicat and me Jessica and both of us Jess! Depends on the name though, is it particularly canine? Xx

I spose its hard and its ip to you what you feel if you could stil use it aswel as a pet being called it aswel. I couldnt do it personally people have suggested names to me cause im completely stuck but most the names they say are names id consider as pet names not a kids name.

it wouldn't put me off, the name we have finally decided on for a girl is a dogs name from a very famous film also there is a monster called the same in another film lol. I don't care tho I love it.

I have this dilemma! Me and Matt want to call our little girl Poppy but its my dads dogs name - and lets face it, she isn't going to be dying anytime soon!!

And I just KNOW he would never let me live it down! Not in a nasty way, its just my dad, he'd tease me about it forever!

So we're in two minds :( which is a shame cause its a name we both love xxx

o its a hard one lucky for me my inlaws called there dog tyson and i dont really want a mini tyson running around i dont envy you xxx
