Hi all. Jumping the gun a little with 11 days to go but here goes.

My MIL told me that you shouldn't let baby boys cry for too long, because something to do with their little boy bits. Does anybody know what shes on about lol??
Thanks :) x

never heard that one before:shrug:

I'm sure she's probably just spinning you a line

haha MILs do love to wind us up! No, never heard that before! Xxx

Nope never heard of anything like that.
Within reason you shouldnt let either boys or girls cry to long.

Thats a new one to me....i havent got boys but i havent heard that before. x

I don't see why it makes any difference letting boys cry for too long over girls. I try not to let my little boy cry too long, if I can help it, because it makes him easily upset the rest of the day. Contrary to what many of the older generations might believe, long-term crying that is left un-responded is not good for ANY baby. Babies are in a stage of Trust vs Mistrust and they basically learn that they cannot trust anyone when their basic needs are not being met. Emotional needs are still needs.

Nope cant say I've heard of that one before x Although dont let my little boy cry for too long anyway x

never heard of it...LO never crys too long anyway but i want to look into this xx

I heard it causes inguinal hernia if they cry for too long (if they r already born with it, crying for too long makes it worse). It's more common in baby boys.

Never heard of that before! I never let my little man cry too long anyway. Surely crying for too long is equally as bad for baby girls as baby boys...

It sounds like she is referring to a hernia. I don't know about the inguinal hernia, but Mika had a pretty big umbilical hernia and my Dr. said that crying doesn't cause the hernia, but it can make it look a lot worse. Maybe that's what she's talking about?

Not hear that one before!
Crying isn't great for either gender.

3 boys and never heard of it, though I do agree with not just letting them cry haha but JMO.....probably some old myth she heard

Only if babies r born with hernia ladies. There is nothing to worry about. It's like old wives tales (it's very common in my country, all old ladies link hernia to baby crying). Crying doesnt cause hernia, it makes it worse. It's more common in baby boys (eps premies), & there r 2 types of hernia one close to the belly button I guess & the other one close to the genitals. If it's true all colicy baby boys will suffer frm hernia because of crying. My cousin's daughter (a premie) was born with it, & as she used to cry alot it got worse (I guess she used to cry because of pain) & she had a minor operation at 3 mnths, & she's ok now.

dont ya just love the advice we get given!!!

my mum goes mad at me for leaving my baba to cry, i leave him for 20 mins max and more often than not he soon drifts off to sleep. he is a nosy little boy and hates missing out, even when he is sooooooooo tired , you can see him fighting it!!!

Agree, a couple of my boys had these and crying made them look worse!!

Kane was born with an iguinal hernia that was not long ago repaired, crying cant make it worse but does make it look worse :hugs:
