I had a growth scan due to fundus height being 5cms too big and got told yes shes a big baby. But thats all they said really. From what iv read 97th percentile is rather large! Anyone else had this? How big should I expect my baby to be? Will they let me go full term? Im already in a lot of pain with SPD so its worrying me! X

My girly has been "big" since about 32 weeks, but it seems like it's mostly her head. You should have a growth chart in your notes or an EFW (estimated fetal weight) noted on the report from your scan. That will give you an idea about size now.

Don't forget the %ile measurements are for someone of your size so petite mama's 97%ile baby would be smaller than a bigger mum's one.

They will probably just keep an eye on you for GD (which I have though it doesn't seem to be why she's big) and keep an eye on size too. Because my LO just has a big head and isn't fully engaged they are giving her one more week to get in there. If she's not in then I'll be scheduled for a c-section as they're not sure she will fit.

In terms of SPD mine is only just starting to get worse as she engages - just gt lots of rest and do as the doctors say x

Thanks for your reply :) ive been checked for GD 5 weeks ago and my results were within range. The only thing i have in my notes is some measurements it dosent mention EFW :( from what ive looked on the internet though its also my daughters head that is most ahead! Must be full of brains-just like her Mummys!lol i really hope i might get to meet her a little early x

they let me go full term my fh was 46 at 38wks and said she would be 10/11lb or more.i was induced 40+4 and she weighed 9lb 3oz so they can be inaccurate

There are lots of ladies whose scans weren't accurate like Babyhopes said! My SIL's LO was meant to be 10 - 11lb and she was 8.7lbs at birth.

I'm only being induced because of GD - not because of her size :-)

Mine is over the 97th centile, huge head and stomach.
I was also tested for GD but it came back normal.
I'm having another scan next week and will then probably be scheduled for a c section too.

97th centile is a birth weight of 9 1/2 -10lb my ds1 was born 98th centile at 9lb 10oz ds2 didnt land on the chart when he was born at 10lb 12oz,

Thankyou for your replies. Was your babies size the reason why they induced you babyhopes? Cause they normally wait 2weeks before inducing dont they? The thing that panicks me is baby getting distressed in labour if shes too big! X
p.s babyhopes where is your LO's babygrow from? Its gorgeous!x

I have a giant baby, too, and my doctors and MWs aren't worried about it one bit. The only difference is that if I make it past due date without going into labor, I may be induced at 40 1/2 weeks instead of 42 like most.

my last baby was 10lbs 5 oz she was 9 days overdue. I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and her EFW was 3lbs 6oz got another scan on the 15th to check weight again...althought last week at 33 and a half weeks i was measuring 38 weeks but i think that might be something to do with her being breech :) xx

Asda!

the reason they induced me i have too much amnotic fluid and condition called polyhydronioes(cant spell it :haha:) obviously her weight was a factor.i had sweep at 40+2 but it never worked.

my baby was big and the labour was 3hrs and was fairly easy( painful tho Lol)

i was measuring big with my son and he was 7lb13 not always right.

I am measuring 40 weeks - well was last week and have a growth scan on Friday to see how big bubz is. I had one with DD1 at 36 weeks and she was estimated to be weighing 8lb 10oz, she was born 3 weeks later weighing 9lb 10oz. I am sure that would be about right so I'm not sure what to expect with this scan, whether to go with the estimation or not as I have seen on here they can be greatly inaccurate.

Anyways I have SPD this time which I didn't have last time, could be the influence of an active 2 year old :P It does make me want to throw in the towel at the best of times but I am trying to be active and do some light exercises which seem to help.

With DD1 they made no indication of what they would want to do as it they were more concerned and convinced I had GD due to my high BMI anyways. I tested negative! So they more or less left me too it with only my midwife offering to do a sweep at our next appointment which was at 39 1/2 weeks, though I didn't make it to then anyway. Think they are being more pre-cautious with this one as I had a prev. cs and they probably don't want to put too much strain on the scar, tbh I am happy to carry on till bubz is ready, a friend of mine has just been through an unsuccessful induction which lasted 3 days before they did a c-section. I don't fancy that and besides they will put restrictions on me due to prev. cs anyway.

It's all down to personal choice though. I am only willing to have a c-section if babies head is really too big to fit through my pelvis following a thorough investigation and not guesstamations or if she became distressed for too long.

I'd say be open-minded and do research, there are some great threads on here with plenty of advice and talk over any concerns with your health carer. You are the final decision maker so anything you are not happy with needs to be brought up. I intend to do this at my appt. Friday (leaving it to the last min, thats me!).

My son was born on the 97th centile weighing 9lb 8,, iv been told this baby is going to be big too but not as big as my son.. but who knows, they arent always accurate! xx

hey thought I'd update, went for my growth scan today and bubz is measuring 8lb 13oz already! I am aware that it could be out but as I posted before, DD1 was pretty close to the mark. She is looking like a long baby too. DD1 was 8lb 10oz at 36 weeks so the weight is only 1-2 oz out from her at a week later, so it would be right if she follows trend.
