I did it a little with Hayden, started around 7mo I think it was but wasn't really consistent until closer to a year when he started doing it back. We never did tons of words, just basics like milk, eat, more, all done, drink...umm maybe a couple of others?

I'd like to do more with Preston as it definitely helped Hayden. I also want to start earlier so hopefully he'll start signing back earlier. When did you start? What words did you find to be the most helpful? Anyone know of an app on iphone that had lots of words and showed you how to do it? I've seen quite a few but the lite versions only have a couple words so before buying one I'd like to make sure it was actually helpful

I started last Thursday attending a course...

I started at a class when Roo was 3 months old :)

I'm itching to get signing with my Lo and will be starting between 5-6 months. I'll be starting with the basics, more/all done/bath/bed/music/nappy/bottle/drink

6 months and just the basics. He started signing milk back right away. He picked up a few other useful ones by around 1 year. We didn't bother with anything else because we didn't feel the need.

Preston is 3.5mo now I was thinking of introducing milk, eat and all done now but wasn't sure if it's too early to even bother with....

I won't be doing a class though, just look up ones we think we'll use

It's early for him, but if starting early helps to get you in the practice of doing it then go ahead. It certainly won't hurt to start early, he just won't really get much benefit until closer to 6 months.

Hmmm... not sure about an app, sorry.

We started at 6mths. Lo will wave to people now as 'hello/goodbye' is the one I do most consistently. I also do more, again, nappy, finished, milk, drink, food, jumperoo (we use trampoline), bricks, ball and a couple of others I can't remember! I'm not as consistent as I'd like to be, but I do thnk i's helping her to understand more even if she's not signing them all back. eg when she's pushing her food away at mealtimes & I say/sign 'ok we're finished' she instantly relaxes.

Like seity said, starting early will do no harm & may actually make you a better/more consistent signer by the time lo is paying attention :flower:

I started going when LO was 3 months old. The first term was more for me than him, as I wanted to learn as many signs as possible before trying to teach them to DH and LO. I don't think you're too early to start signing to him, he'll watch your hands anyway, so why not! Just don't expect him to understand much yet :)

I'm going to start DD in approx. 2 weeks when I start introducing cereal. I bought a book full of signs, and I plan on showing her some when she's in her high chair and I can ask her if she wants more then do the sign.

I want to teach her

-milk
-diaper
-hungry
-cup
-more
-thank you
-please
-I love you
-eat

maybe a few more

Actually it doesnt because you emphasise the word at the same time. All research suggests that it doesn't, it just means a baby is able communicate with you before their vocal cords have developed to say the word properly.

they did a bit in my baby class last wk and i have a little leaflet with the basics in so ive started now even tho my sons just turned 7wks, yes i know he'll not catch it on yet but i'm enjoying learning them and will do them when the opp comes, lol i av 3 dogs so he should be learning 'dog' first as ive got that down to a tee!!

It can actually make children very effective & persistent communicators. There is also evidence that the part of the brain responsible for hand movements is right next to the part that is responsible for speech. So all those neurons firing for signing actually promotes speech development.

I completely accept that it's not for everyone though hun - not having a go, just giving the evidence (I sign at work) :flower:

It's proven that it doesn't delay speech and when babies do start talking they often have a broader vocabulary and are able to build sentences faster than their non-signing peers :)
