Bad night...

Last night was a bad night. Poppy took ages to latch on each time, missing my nipple, or seeming to latch on, then stopping and falling off the breast.

Also, i'd feed her, but she'd fall asleep within ten minutes. I'd wind her, try to wake her etc, then put her down. But within 20 mins she'd wake up and start rooting again.

I just feel so exhausted by it all today after so little sleep and feeling frustrated that i'm not feeding her right. Although when she eventually latches on she can stay there for half an hour if it's not night time.

Any advice? This morning i was BF in tears as i tried to get her on my breast ( i had engorged lumps so was tackling the rugby hold to clear those blocked ducts...) and wondered if i could cope for the next few weeks. Perhaps it's just the tiredness kicking in :(

O hun, it sounds to me like your doing an amazing job.... and your experiences so far dont sound unusual for the early days at all.

I never got on with eh rugby hol personally but I have small boobs! Could you try the lying down position and feeding like that at night. You can still guide bubs and support her latch, and relax a little yourself (especially if she's slipping off at night). COuld you co-sleep like this for a while? I imagine your DD still hasn't quite realised the difference from night and day yet, so nights will be more of a struggle... but not for long!!

Could you take a pump to bed with you... to pump of any milk DD doesn' take - to ease your engorgement? Also hot flannels helped sooth the lumpies.

It sounds like she needs a little more time to remember how to latch on properly. I had to guide Gracie for about 4 - 5 weeks before she and I got used to it.

Also, could you link in with a bf counsellor? I got extra support through one in the early days.

p.s. grab sleep when and where you can!!!

:hugs:

That must be horrible!! :( The tiredness does take over. I remember breaking down many times at 5am because she wouldn't latch on but was screaming because she was hungry. It's tuff. Do you have a HV? Anyone you could contact for help?

My midwife is coming tomo so i'll talk to her. Off for a nap now. hopefully sleep with help!

Don't feel pressured to continue if you don't want to, but don't feel you can't get through it either. I'm sure everyone will be there either way. Good luck!

You sound exactly like me hun. That is me every night with Hannah and I am sooooooooo tired. It's totally exhausting and she has been like all day today.

I have been told to keep and eye on bubs and tickle them to keep them awake before they fall asleep after the 10 min window. Also to do all the stripping them to their vest or even nappy. Make sure the positioning is correct for proper latching. I found this video that may help hun

Apparently it is all in the latch. Let's hope we can get through this hun before we lose our sanity xxx

good luck ladies! I hope it gets easier soon!
