Hi all,

I hope you are all well today.

I am just wondering if anyone could put my mind at ease?

I am 22 weeks and for the last 3 weeks I keep having this pain in my back on the mid to upper right hand side. It isn't there in the morning but after the second meal I eat, it comes and gets worse everytime I eat. I thought It was indegestion but no remedies work. I went to the docs yesterday who was confused and said it might be muscle or nerve related but he can't understand why eating and drinking would bring it on.

The pain varies from razor blade, to twisting, to spasm type pains and it is every day no matter what I eat or drink. Doc says it isn't gallstones. Any ideas as to what it might be or what I could do to relieve it? It is making me really grumpy! :(

Thanks in advance! xx

I am not much help as I have never heard of this or anyone who has had it. I would suggest going to see a obstetric physiotherapist which should be available at the nearest hospital .
I got referred by my doctor may be worth going back or giving your doc a call to see if he/she suggests this ?

x hope it gets better x

Maybe it is indigestion but because it is uncomfortable you tense up (or have held yourself funny in the past?) and so a nerve or muscle hurts too.

What indigestion remedies have you tried? I found small meals often was the key, don't let your stomach be ever empty or ever very full and maybe try a relaxing bath to see if you can relieve any related muscle/nerve issue.

I had something similar caused by repetitive strain injury... basically I was sitting on my sofa on the laptop all day when I needed to be sitting at a desk with a proper chair. It started off as a sore wrist and worked its way up until I had a lot of pain in my upper back.

Could it be something like that?

I'm really stumped by why eating would make it worse. Maybe raising your arm repeatedly brings it on?

Honestly it could still be indigestion, I have it some days and haven't found a medicine yet that helps it on the bad days. I would suggest for a week or so- eat very small meals several times a day. It will give your body time to digest what you ate before you put more food on top of it, our digestions process slows to a crawl during pregnancy so it takes some getting used to

It doesn't sound like back/bone/nerve pain though if it's affected by eating

Thank you so much for your replies!!

I am going to try some more indegestion relief I think. I have tried Rennie, Windeze, Gaviscon etc but I'm going to try some others. The lunch I had just killed me so I can't t think it is muscle related? I have just bought a heat pad and will have a nice bath tonight just in case!

Thanks again! x

Make sure you get Gaviscon Advanced not the regular stuff, that never touched my pregnancy indigestion. It is much gloopier so a bit gross to swallow but makes all the difference.

does sound a lot like acid reflux

i have the same thing happening! its painful and mysterious

Im going with the small meal theory, if it only happens after your second meal its got be food related. You poor thing, Im still waiting for the part where i feel well and bloom, I just feel huge and like i need a big poo all the time!

I was having severe upper back and rib pains and started seeing a Chiropractor and getting a message (by a proper sports masseuse) and it relieved the pain and I haven't had it back. Maybe you could give it a go? You'll need more than 1 treatment to have consistent results.
