Benefits and people moving in

Has anybody been on benefits and then had someone move in with them?If so what did you end up losing/getting less of? I need to know how much I would lose if OH moved in. I currently get £53 a week CTC, £47 a week IS and I get £228 a fortnight towards my rent and I don't pay council tax. My property is Band B and that means I would pay £1111.65 a year in council tax. My OH hasn't got a job up here yet but he is looking so I'll give a rough guess and say if he were to move in and have an income it would be around £18,000 a year mark until he gets settled and starts applying for better paid jobs. I tried entitledto.org but it was useless. The money I get at the minute pretty much keeps a roof over mine and Grace's head. If I lost too much and couldn't afford to keep this place then he isn't going to move in with me until he can afford it on his wages. He's miffed because I told him he would only be able to spend a max of 3 nights here a week lol

I still don't get why you don't just ask me these questions, you know what my job is :dohh:

If he earns more than your entitlement to Income Support per week you lose that. Depending on how much he earns you'll probably lose the housing benefit and council tax benefit too. Put it this way, I earn £15k a year, and I'm not entitled to any housing benefit or council tax benefit. So if he's earning over 14k a year I think you'll lose almost all of it. I'm not sure about tax credits though, you'll get some child tax credits still, and if he's working more than 30 hours a week you get extra working tax credits too.

It's hard to work out for a hypothetical job, you'd need actual figures to work out the tax credits. But if he has a full time job I'd say to expect to lose the housing, council tax an income support. And for tax credits to decrease. xx

(Apologies if that makes no sense, I'm exhausted. Ring me tomorrow when I'm more awake and I'll explain better ) xx

:dohh: I always forget to ask you lol yeah that makes sense. I don't mind not having to be on benefits anymore to be honest, if his job could pay our rent and bills I'd be more than happy for him to move in so I could finally give them the boot. I assumed that I would lose HB and CTB even with just the one income anyway. Hmm... I'm lucky that my rent isn't high but as it's a big house council tax is quite high although not as high as I thought, I was thinking band c, maybe even d

I think yours is the same band as mine, it works out as £130 a month I think. We manage to pay everything on my wage although it is tight, but my rent is £150 a month more than yours. So if he gets a job that pays around £15k a year you'll be able to manage okay I think :) xx

Ok thanks, I'll get my calculator out now and have a look lol
