My DS is 9 and a half months now and is starting to eat more solids. He was EBF until 6 months and is now down to 3-4 feeds per day plus solids.

I've noticed he's been (understandably) thirsty since he's been breastfeeding less. However, the only cup he can drink from is an open cup which I don't mind at meal times but I want him to be able to have the freedom of a cup around in the day to drink from as needed when he's thirsty.

I've tried a few straw cups and regular sippy cups but he just doesn't get them and chews on them instead often getting frustrated. He's never had a bottle so I understand why but don't know how to help him or what brand might be easiest for him to switch over to. Any ideas?

DS wasn't breastfed at 9 months but he loved his munchkin 360 miracle cup, it looks and feels like an open cup but with a valve in the middle to restrict the speed the drink comes out at. Maybe something like that?

Hmmm we taught our kids how to use a straw first by getting a juice box and squeezing it just a little so they got juice and they would sucks for more and got the idea and when they seemed to get how it worked we got them a straw cup first. Later moved to sippy but we found that easier so far. My oldest was used to a bottle along with breastfeeding and our middle was ebf.. No bottles and she caught on quickly with the juice box as well. :)

Try to find cups with no valve. I have always use tommee tippee ones. Both mine were breastfed. The first I bought lots of different ones before realising she didn't understand sucking with a valve. We also mainly used open cups at home. By 14 months she rarely ever spills which is great. Think she learnt a straw at about 14 months too.

We use the basic Tommy tippee with a lid, they're only about £1-2

We just use an open cup. Leo hardly ever drinks from it though. We just offer it on occasion. Mostly he just nurses for hydration. My daughter mostly nursed for hydration well past a year old as well but also used an open cup to drink from.

Straw cups are great for this. We use Momma straw cups, which are anti-spill as well and easy for little hands to manage. As my daughter got a bit older, a sports bottle type cup worked well too. We have one from the Little Green Bottle Company, which is great, but they are more free flowing and probably not always totally spill proof, so I'd start with a straw cup for now.
