Hi

Im starting to look at getting a birthing pool. Is it me or are they ridiculously expensive. People buy them usually from the looks of things, where are all the second hand ones on ebay?!

My MW also said I should get a self heating one as im a first timer, but im buggered if im spending £400 on a bloody paddling pool!

Anyone got any ideas on how I can do it on the cheap without flooding the living room?

yeah they are pricey lol have you checked to hire one? i think i might hire one with a heater and pump etc.... or just use the bath ( got to check what the bath is like first lol not seen the house yet ) but id like deeper water to be able to move more

Yes thet can be expensive but they are a bit more than a paddling pool. Dont worry about getting a heated one, its not essential that its heated, as long as you can keep adding hot water that should be fine. You never know, you might want the water quite cool when labouring, your body is working hard & produces lots of heat.

Birthpools are quite a bit deaper than a paddling pool & made of stronger material, plus the one i bought has a padded bottom where as paddling pools dont. You could be in there a while & you will want to be as comfy as possible.

Birthing pools have handles so you can move about & get in to a range of positions plus they should come with everything you need (air pump, water pump, hose etc).

Yes it can work out expensive but if your going to be keeping it for any other babies you are planning then its not so bad. They have a good resale value too so you could always sell it to make some money back.

Have a look at La Bassine or Birth Pool in a Box, they are much more reasonable

I watched a show within the past few days and the woman just had a normal looking pool you might buy for kids to use outside anywhere. Her husband and midwife spent the whole time heating water and refilling it because the water would not stay warm enough! The woman was shivering and chattering (I am sure partially from the birth) and didnt look comfortable at all. Plus with her MW and spouse busy refilling the tub the whole time she got no support! I am really not sure why she stayed in the tub because it looked awfully uncomfortable! I think if it is really what you want to do a heated option is probably worth it.

I bought a birth pool in a box off ebay with a few accessories (including a brand new unused liner still in wrapper) for £39  i'd say keep an eye out on ebay and also in classifieds/buy swap and sell etc
