My beautiful daughter is one week old and after a sleepy first day things are going well. Until today when she latched on my right nipple and suckled her little heart out. When i eventually managed to get it out of her mouth she had sucked so hard she has made a painful blood blister right in the centre of my nipple.

I have applied lanolin but i'm not sure what to do now. My main concern is if i carry on feeding her on my right nipple it is going to be so sore or even worse....it might pop in her mouth. My friend said it would be ok as blood is sterile but i can't imagine it being nice for her if it did pop in her mouth.

Any advice is appreciated xx

it will be fine if it pops - won't hurt her at all, but she might sick the blood up again. Scary, but totally harmless!

To give it a chance to heal you could try block feeding where you do all feedson one side only for 3-4 hours, then do the same on the other side. I found that this really helped when I had sore nipples!

Oh good. That puts me a bit at ease. She only feeds every 3-4 hours, would i be ok just feeding her on one side for a couple of feeds? Maybe the next few overnight?

That will be fine, but overnight isn't the best time as it's when your milk-making hormones are at their highest. If you did your feeds on the same side overnight for a few days you could end up horribly lopsided!

It's ok. I bit the bullet and fed her from both sides. It hurt but it wasn't too bad. I was worried she didn't get a good enough feed from just one side.
