Is anybody doing baby lead weaning or feeding their babies what they eat? LO only eats jarred baby food. Lately I've been trying to feed him from the table but he gags & chokes & it freaks me out. I was hoping I could have him eating a lot of what we eat by the end of June when we go on vacation since it would be so much easier than taking baby food everywhere but he doesn't look anywhere near being able to do it. Can anybody suggest foods I can try with him? I think it's more of a texture thing because he shouldn't be choking on mashed potatoes but he does. I gave him teeny tiny bites of turkey tonight & DH was like "is he choking????!!!" which almost gave me a heart attack so we quit. You think I would remember this stuff but I don't. What should I feed him? What size bites? Duh?!

How old is he? I started with blw and just gave big chunks of food the size of his fist. Some gagging is normal though, he has to get used to chewing, not just swallowing. I gave toast strips, steamed carrots/potatoes, green beans, baked apples, chunks of soft fruit mangos/oranges/kiwis, oatmeal ect. He can eat anything really now

He'll be 7 months on the 18th. Those are all great ideas. He's definitely NOT chewing.

I started with small chunks of bananas. He did great with it and now eats chunks of avocado, carrots, sweet potato, asparagus, carrots, and more. Just make sure you cook the veggies really well. Have you tried the baby puffs? They melt in their mouths but it helps them learn how to chew.

Gagging is completely normal in blw. I'm just starting out and lo gagged a lot yesterday. It's terrifying but if you think about it, it's a good thing as it shows they have the reflex to stop them choking.

We've been BLW since LO was about 5 1/2 months. (started a bit early as I was going back to work). Gagging is completely normal until they learn to move the food around their mouths. My wee man occasionally gags, but only if he's been a bit too ambitious.

We can feed him ANYTHING now. The other day he had some garlic bread and pizza with us. He routinely eats what we eat we just have to watch the salt when we cook. We cheat a little though as we also feed him baby yogurts and use those fruit smoothies from Ella's kitchen as a dessert.

Spaghetti is good - they can initially suck the sauce off and then eat the pasta when they realise that, that too. is edible. My wee man liked to wave it about as well, so watch your walls!

We just started with DD, though we don't do it every day since she is 5 1/2 months right now. But, we always have her in her high chair sitting at the table with us when we eat and she seemed interested. We started with pear slices, which she loved (well, at least the juice from it! LOL). We have also given her banana, broccoli, and we gave her a strip of tri tip to play with tonight. She seemed to like the taste of everything, though everything was spat out (normal) and the dog got a surprise piece of tri tip and broccoli tonight since it all ended up on the floor. LOL! She really seemed to like the broccoli most so far as she kept putting it in her mouth and then spitting pieces out and then putting them back in her mouth. So cute! We just put them on the tray and let her play with them so she gets used to the food. She hasn't gagged yet, but I know it is normal - it's their natural defense against choking at this point.

Just wanted to add that I found finger shaped pieces of food went down better than tiny chunks. Easier for them to pick up, and they can sort of gnaw on it and practice chewing. I found my girl gagged less when we did this because she would hold the food in her hand and chew off pieces rather than getting the whole piece in her mouth and not knowing how to move it around with her tongue.

Ditto to what's been said :)

We also used a mesh feeder for things like chicken and steak for a while - so he could have that taste/little bits that fell out but I didn't have to worry about him choking on a big bit he couldn't chew.
