BMI and medical advice received

I was weighed when I saw the FS, my BMI was 24. I was 26+ but that's all dropped off since I came off the Tamoxifen *shudder*. My weight was never mentioned. Personally, I believe diet/lifestyle is more important and both of mine are atrocious . It's my new year's resolution though*.

*don't hold your breath, I say this EVERY year*

I don't know what grits are/is?

They are a kind of savoury poridgey typed thing, popular in the southern US.

How long were you on Tamoxifen for Keeks, did that bloat you up?

Hi Ladies,
I think they are more concerned about weight if you don't have a period and also it's an easy scapegoat if they are clueless. Just my two cents.

A little bit of butter is a good thing! Apparently, you have never been in the American south? Butter is a food group in itself, LOL.

I was in New Orleans, I attributed their amazing doughnuts and pastries to being directly related to French-Canadians :haha:

that's funny my dad's folks are creole from New Orleans...and my grandmother who is completely FRENCH needs sweets all the time - nevermind that she is DMII lol. (diabetic)

It is used much differently for cancer than it is for fertility.:hugs:

I put on 2 stone with tamoxifen but I was on it daily for 2 years (almost.) I was also moody and very difficult to live with. I had to wear my OHs jeans because mine didn't fit me anymore :growlmad:, so I was snapping at him and wearing his clothes. That man's a saint .

You must be happy to be back in your normal jeans keeks, and with the new boobs :happydance:

It's like having a whole new wardrobe! For my OH as well :haha:.

That's really interesting that people have been advised that a slightly higher BMI is better. I have never got back up to pre-pregnancy weight since having Thomas - I lost a lot of weight over the first year and was down to a BMI of 19.7 at my lightest - I do think that I was a bit too thin for me at that weight. I'm now back up to a BMI of 22 which is great as far as I'm concerned. Pre-pregnancy, my weight had been pretty constant for about ten years with a BMI of about 24. I wonder if it could be a factor.

ETA have never received any medical advice about fertility so haven't voted in the poll.

Voted!

My BMI is 30 or 31 (I don't remember exactly, and tbh, I don't want to! :haha:) and has been for years - my weight has fluctuated within an 8lb range for at least 6 years. I've asked 3 different drs about it (2 OBs and 1 RE), and all three looked at me like I was nuts (which I may be, but that's for another thread!! ) All three said that as long as I was ovulating and had regular cycles (which I do), then my weight was not a factor. My thyroid function is normal and I don't have diabetes or any heart disease (in other words, I have no excuse for my obesity nor do I have any condition related to obesity that could cause infertility), so I take them at their word because dealing with infertility and loss is hard enough without beating myself up over my weight.

HA, I think weight staying steady is more important than the actual number, IYKWIM?

thanks for voting HA :flower:

I think that a bit of extra weight is not in itself a major TTC issue, but it does seem to be a comon theme especially in the UK NHS system that fertility specialists seem to say this as DM said, when a woman is "unexplained"

Maybe I should have added more options in my poll LOL.

This would seem to be the only thing they have been saying to me as we have been told we have unexplained infertility ( said about it in my original thread )

I am fit and well and have always led a healthy active lifestyle - but when I worked out a lot at the gym and swimming etc ( to try to get more weight off) I lost inches although at one point even gained weight I am certain that was down to clomid though.... then I seemed to just loose a bit but really steadily...

I had a midwife I saw say that this kind of exercise was not good... we have a hectic work life but I do feel fit and well and could challenge many people several stone less than me! I think they said my BMI is around 31/32 but even the last nurse I saw said I appeared really fit and well and was carrying a lot of muscle...

Like my hubby said to the hospital gyne, there are a lot of women far, far larger / heavier than me expecting and with children..... hey ho!

Hmm well I go to the gym 4 times a week, I do mostly cardio and pump, but my doctor said that it was good to do all the exercise and puts me in a much better position for a pregnancy  so there is definitely an inconsistency in the advice given.

There was a lady who is a PT who used to post on here (now pregnant) who advised that you can continue with your regular pre-pregnancy exercise programme, just to avoid situps and crunches in the first trimester.

You may be right there, I live in Glasgow, which is not exactly a health conscious city. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/3906559/Glasgow-named-fattest-city-in-UK.html

What to know how i missed someone taking a pic of my arse.

My BMi was 27+ when I started TTC, but my dr has never even mentioned my weight as an issue.

But I've been doing Slimming World and had lost 20lbs before I got my BFP. Not sure it was the reason for the BFP, but hell, it can't have hurt!

Since I've been pregnant I said to the dr about continuing with Slimming World (it's a healthy eating regime, not a calorie controlled diet) but he didn't even listen to that and just said "You shouldn't be trying to lose weight now".

I also asked about whether I could continue running and he said "Well there's no evidence that it does any harm" - v reassuring...

My weight has never been mentioned when discussing ttc with my gp. I am the same weight now that i was when i conceived Derrin and if it wasnt a factor then i dont imagine it should be now. I am no slim jim, i never have been. Its been hard losing the 4 stone(Yip 4 bloody stone) that i put on whilst pg with Derrin but its off now and will stay off until pg with number 2.

i so miss the gym and classes but i am unable to do anything more thank a brisk walk or a swim. :(

Mine didn't require me to be at a specific BMI, but since I wasn't having cycles at all at the time, she recommended that I lose weight because that was likely affecting my cycles. She also pointed out that she would like me to be in the best health possible for having a child especially considering my age. She did not deny that it was certainly possible for me to conceive and carry a perfectly healthy child just the weight I was.

It turns out that losing 48 pounds brought my cycles back completely and ofc, I feel so much better!

I just wanted to throw this out there.

I had the same exact BMI when I conceived my first and my second children. One took 19 months, and the other took 1.

I'm not into the 30 range, but obviously, it's not just weight related.

This is accurate, it is safe to maintain your previous level of activity unless you need to go on bedrest for medical reasons. It really helps to curb the weight gain and also helps you get back into shape sooner after baby comes than women who are completely sedentary during pregnancy :hugs:
