So, as you can probably guess I'm EBF and I have a stinking cold!

I am taking paracetamol every 4 hours but feel so ill I went to bed with LO at 7.45!

Is there anything else I can take?

Everything says consult Dr if breast feeding!

I can't breath through my nose - I have a sore throat and chesty caugh, I ache all over and I'm soooo cold. (Think that's a tempature though as my face is bright pink and hubby says I don't feel cold.

I really need some releafe as I'm still doing night feeds & not sleeping properly which us really not helping!

You could try looking up some natural home made cold remedies. Eat stuff with garlic in it. A could cold remedy is hot water, lemon juice and honey. You can also for chest congestion.........slice an onion put it in a container and sprinkle sugar on the slices. Let it sit for awhile and it will pull out the onion juice and you can take a teaspoon as desired. I know it sounds gross but its actually pretty tasty as you mostly taste the sweetness even my 18month old will take a teaspoon of it.

I feel your pain - I've had a number of horrid colds whilst BF. :hugs:

Rest and fluids is the key.

I always swear by hot lemonade for congestion relief. Pop some lemonade in a cup then into the microwave and drink it whilst it's still hot. It always helps clear my nose and sinuses. Adding slices of lemon will also help aid with the sore throat.

A hot bath can help relieve the chesty cough and bring the mucus off your chest.

I hope you're feeling better very soon. :hugs:

Glycerol/glycerine will help the cough boots do some naturally flavoured ones that are safe when BF. Another remedy that really works but isn't for the faint hearted is honey (or date syrup or molasses), lots of slices of fresh unwaxed lemons, a generous teaspoon of puréed garlic, a generous teaspoon of puréed ginger and a tablespoon of nigella sativa oil-which is totally safe while BF and some studies have shown it to be a galactalogue. Brew up together in a teapot for at least 15 minutes, strain and then drink. It doesn't taste that nice but its not revolting either, it will make you sweat like crazy but it really really works. If you really must, forego the garlic but if you can get hold of the nigella sativa/blackseed oil it's really worth doing so xx

hot bath and then vick's vaporub in the chest and feet (under thick socks)

Viks! I always forget about that.
I think I have some in my drawer as well!

What a difference 6 hours makes though. I went to bed at 7.45 & was feeling so pathetic I was like this is the end for me! Feeling a little better after some sleep!

Might have to get the glycerol for my chesty cough - really can't stand garlic. I'm getting mucus up its just hurting now as I'm coughing so much.

Honey and cinnamon!!!! Google the quantities because I can't remember how much but......works awesome

I found a Neti pot to be amazing when it comes to sinus congestion. Within 24 hours I was feeling much better.

You can take ibuprofen too while BF.

If you have a productive cough (i.e. coughing up phlegm/mucus or feel like you should be able to), I wouldn't put Vicks on your feet. The idea of that is to stop coughing, but you don't want to suppress a productive cough as it's your body's way of getting rid of the nasty stuff in your chest. Glycerol will help soothe your throat but won't suppress the cough so is fine.

I love lemonade or lemon juice in water with a generous teaspoon of honey and a pinch of ground ginger in it.

Also try a humidifier in your bedroom (set it going a while before you go to bed) as it will stop you drying out and make breathing easier. If you don't have a humidifier, try a bowl of hot water or even boil a kettle in your room to get it a bit steamy!

Btw don't buy the 'plain' glycerol bp that one is meant to be put in water and drank and it made me violently sick. It also made me have red wee with what I thought was pus in it, very alarming until I found out that it was the glycerol causing the red colour and the 'pus' was the glycerol coming out intact at the other end! The flavoured one you just take on a spoon like a cough medicine and it doesn't have any freaky or unpleasant side effects xx

I thought honey was a big no-no when br-ing as you can give lo infant botcialism?

No you can't as the botulin spores cannot pass into your milk, they are destroyed by the gut in anyone over 12 months anyway but fungal or other spores cannot pass into breastmilk anyway. Honey is perfectly safe while BF and during pregnancy
