Breast feeding vs. Bottle/Formula Feeding

wowzers, our hormones must be taking a back seat lol - must be all the cold weather... and chocolate

Yea, we sound like grownups haveing a sensible conversation is really refreshing when I first saw the thread I thought, here we go again and each time I came back to it I would squeeze my eyes shut hoping that it had not turned sour

hehe, we've finally reached adulthood :p

I saw one thread go bad fast where one poster said that OP was harming her baby by FF.... It's all about personal choice and comfort.

YAY, before you know it we will be having afternoon tea and coffee mornings around the neibours house. And talking about being a horisontal hero without giggling our asses off

 that one may take some time

but yay for coffee mornings - can we include bacon sandwiches and hot chocolates?

Absolutly bacon sandwiches hot chocolate and lemon yogart!

I breastfed Amelia but had lots of issues with latching and I expressed for a month before she learnt to latch on and I managed to feed her until she was 4.5 months old and then I switched onto bottle and formula.

With breastfeeding I felt like I bonded with Amelia and I loved being the one to nurish her :cloud9:

With bottle feeding Amelia was a lot more content, she slept more and was generally a happier baby and I was a happier mummy because I was able to sleep a few hours at a time instead of for 30 minutes.

As long as a baby is fed and happy I don't think it matters how they are fed, so when you make your decision don't feel you need to bow to pressure. :hugs:

xXx

I mixed fed my LO so I can give the you the best and worst of both worlds!!

Breastfeeding was something I desperately wanted to do. To me, you at least try BF before moving to FF. That's what it's there for after all!! I had trouble when after 2 weeks my milk hadn't come in. I had to top up LOs feeds and did so until he was 7 months! :)

I found that although BFing was hard inthe beginning, after LO got his latch right it was so quick and convenient. In the time that my friends had made up bottles let them warm/cool ect (all the time with a hungry baby!) I'd be fed, finished and burping by the time they were even feeding. also I could feed pretty much anywhere without having to worry about being somewhere I could get warm water ect.

Also another thing I found was when OH offered to make a bottle up and feed LO for a night feed. I'd lay awake either waiting for him to feed him or wind him/settle him. As much as you think you won't I guarantee you will def end up awake/ not properly asleep through them regardless of who feeds. It was much easier for me to flop boob out, feed him and put him back to sleep.

My OH bonded with LO just fine (infact he's his favourite now!) :( haaa! He helped with winding and changing plus daddies are the best of playing... There are other ways baby can bond. Doesn't just have to be feeding.

I'd say give it a go even for a couple feeds, if it doesn't work out then try FF x

There are lots more benefits health wise to breastfeeding. But I see so many saying they know them all and going for formula so I dont know why there is a VS thread again about this here.

Personally I will only breastfeed as I seen the benefits for myself. And its much easier for me than messing about with bottles and sterilizers, I am a lazy type that lies to lie in bed and feed and go back to sleep. I co sleep also. my son hasnt even been sick and is still breastfed even though this pregnancy. Works for me, its handy and always there. I get loads of skin to skin with him to which is amazing stuff. Its not for everyone I know but its for me I know that much. And this next baby will certainly be breastfed to. If you actually do want to know the benefits of breastfeeding go to sites like www.kellysmom.com for info as I am sure I will be saying nothing you havnt heard before on the health front.

Dragonfly- I always wondered; if you breastfeed throughout pregnancy when the babies born do you make colostrum? Or is it still the same breastmilk?

one of my boobs which my son has went off months ago is colostrum and the other is suppose to change back before labour. Though that hasnt appeared to have taken place yet and not sure how fast that happens but I have faith. Least there's one there that defo has it.

Breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby. There are no negatives to breastfeeding. I highly recommend you at least try it, there are so many proven and real health benefits to your baby that artificial milk will never be able to copy. Becoming a parent is all about putting your childs needs before your own.

** Before anyone gets 'offended' this isn't directed at the Mum's who unfortunately could not breastfeed

i will definately be bottle feeding, i think its easier, less painful and i personally wouldnt wanna get me baps out in front of mil lol. also i want oh to help out and be as much involved as i am and i know my sisters will want to feed bubs whenever they're about too!

Definately not easier!

With fomula feeding, you have to sterilse and make up bottles as and when you need them. What a pain at 3am eh!

Least with booby with can whip it out and feed baby in bed ohh it's just so easy, no faffing with sterlising and making up bottles, it's perfect temperature, always available, so easy! I couldn't be bothered to formula feed, too much work :)

id rather feel comfortable feeding my baby than feelin uncomfortable and hate it!

Its been good to read all of the responses on here as i have been worrying about this for a while.

I do want to BF as i know it has many benefits etc but am very worried about not knowing if baba has got enough of it. Im also very consious of sore nipples (sorry i know that is something minute to worry about over baba feeding but it scares me). I would have wanted DF to take in turns with feeding too for bonding etc but he wont be able to feed baba as he only has the use of his right arm so wont be able to bring up wind or hold him properly etc.

i will say tho that i i dont get on with BF or expressing, i dont have any issues switching to FF. As long as my baby is being fed and we both r very happy, it makes no odds to me. As long as i can say i tried it, thats all that matters.

Want to say thanks for everyones opinions on this thread too as it has made me abit more aware of what i might expect with my baby xx

Just wanted to clarify a few things for you!

- You will know if baby is getting enough. They will be contented, having plenty of wet nappies and putting on weight steadily

- With the correct latch, you shouldn't get sore nipples. Breastfeeding is not meant to hurt

- Dad can bond in other ways. Hold, bathing, changing, singing, talking, taking baby out for walks

You can keep bottles in the sterliser to keep them sterilie.
You can also fill the bottles and put them in the fridge/on the side half filled with cooled boiled water.
You can top the bottles up, as you need them with boiling water from the kettle then add the milk.
Its really not that hard!
The new electric sterilisers take a matter of minutes but most people would have the bottles ready esp at night time. I have always done it this way with no problems.
As for going out, thats easy. You take a carton of ready milk. Failing that, take some powdered milk in a container with the number of scoops and use a fisher price flask to fill it up with boiling water. You can also heat the ready made carton up using the flask of boiling water. Its slightly more of a fuss than bf but really its NO big deal!

Course it's not, but not as easy as just whipping your boob out and having to do nothing :)
