my LO is 6 days old and currently in special care and i have been expressing milk and 2 days ago i started trying to breastfeed her and she seems to be doing quite well, the thing is since yesterday my milk seems to be getting less and less, anyone know why this is and anythig i can do to increase it???

Tiredness, dehydration, emotions, stress, expressing too infrequently, not eating enough... so many factors.

How often are you expressing and how often are you putting her to the breast? Do you express near her or if not can you look at a photograph of her?

They can give you a drug to increase your supply I was told by the midwives when I was worried about mine. Hope this helps.

:hugs:

I've just spent a month in SCBU and I have had the same problem. Day 6 is still quite early though so you should be able to increase your supply quickly. You need to express 6-8 times a day including in the night.
I hope your supply increases soon xxx

omg i didnt realise there was so many factors towards it, ok well im tired, stressed, dont get time to eat alot and often to tired to express very often so i think i have my answer

i only express about 4 times a day cos i also try to breastfeed her about 3 times a day!!! im just getting really worried that it wont come back!!!!

I know people say that tiredness and stress etc are all factors but 2 thirds of the worlds babies are breast fed in famines and war zones so it isn't that great a factor. My baby was in scbu too and away in another hosp for a few days right at the beginning. I really struggled and my milk came in and went again. I started expressing 8 times a day, even in the night (very important)! I was also put on Domperidone pills when we came home as my supply was pathetic. This is an anti emetic pill (anit-sickness) which has the side eefect of increasing your prolactin levels so your breast milk goes up, quite a bit too. So I am now doing really well with supply.

Ask your doc or m/w about getting the pills xxx

I dont know but wanted to say hope your LO is ok

Make sure you drink plenty of water, eat plenty and rest. Try and put your baby to your breast as much as you can to promote milk production and express when you are unable to feed her (ie when you are not with her in the hospital)

we spent 3 weeks in scbu expressing untill Evie learnt to breast feed. We did lots of skin to skin when she was well enough and expressed every 3 hours missing just one session during the night. when she started latching i was told to express when she hadfinished as prem babies dont drain the breast well and it keeps up your supply

xx

my milk supply seems to of nearly stopped :hissy::hissy::hissy: anything i can do????

Hi hun, try taking fenugreek, its a herbal tablet you can get from holland and barratt and it increases milk supply. Also eat oats for example porridge which has been known to help increase milk supply. There's lots of info on BF at https://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/index.html

I hope it sorts itself out for you hun. Its a really useful website for all sorts of stuff.
