breastfeedin in public

Haven't read it all yet but I can't believe anyone could compare it to urinating!! How is it any different to me eating my sandwich in the street, if nobody can see anything (and how is it any different to wearing a low-cut top if the baby is actually feeding?) x

Agree 110%!!!

Exactly!! People just assume they're sleeping! I haven't had that in public but in people's houses, someone will walk into the room and come over to have a good look at him! x

Hahaha, Well, everyone close to me has grown up around breastfeeding and are pretty relaxed about it really; My relatives or close friends will often come up for a good look, or even kiss or stroke Anna's head while I'm feeding her. Felt a bit weird about them being so close to my boobs at first, but it's actually helped me to feel more at ease when feeding her - made them seem completely unprivate or de-sexualised if you know what I mean? ... Yup, for the next 9 months or so, I'm afraid that Mr and Mrs Nork are officially retired from their position as fun-bags, taking on the sole title and role of yum-bags for Anna!

My family's all completely used to it too - my sister and I were both breastfed and I have no problem with feeding at my mum's with everyone around (will be tomorrow, in fact!) I did feel a bit strange about it for the first few weeks but I know what you mean about them seeming completely de-sexualised now. To me it's no different to getting a bottle out to feed him - wonder if I'll ever see them in the same way again! We were up at a friend's this weekend in a room full of women (Sam's first hen weekend ) and when there was enough space for me to sit on the sofa I was totally comfortable feeding him there (didn't even consider the fact that other people might find it strange) x

Glad to read about Starbucks in that police thread - I've fed Sam in Starbucks but didn't know they had a policy to allow it. Wish more places would do the same x

quite frankly, baby wants food, baby eats. Well done to all of you who have had to stand up to prudes :hugs:

Read the police forum thread, and was quite sad to read some of the comments, but i suppose there will always be small minded bigots!!

What most people do not understand is that a Mother who breast feeds through her choice cannot choose when and where the baby wants food!

If the Mother is in the High Street and the baby is screaming what would any Mother naturaly do?

She could always carry around a bottle of breast milk...

 are they having a laugh?!

Hahahaha! Good luck to ANYBODY who tries to make Anna (or any breastfed baby, for that matter) take a bottle! I'd love for them to see me try!!

heres the thread I started.... I also Had my SAY on the long thread that I posted earlier!! Reading more of it I was disgusted on what peoples views were of it!! Had to have my rant.... as you do lol!!!

These two comments pissed (sorry) me off the most!!! Unfortunately the person who made them is an ex-member!!! Or else hed have a piece of my mind!!

The reality of the matter is that its much more likely for someone to sit there open blowse or with a strappy top pulled down and a big fat udder hanging out
and In fact, the sort of women that breast feed their baby in public often do it because they know it causes other people a mild degree of disgust and they want to push their 'right to feed it in public' SHOCKING!!! And FILLED ME WITH RAGE!!! :hissy:

:hissy: at some of those comments! If the NHS wants to encourage people the breastfeed (now that they're even advertising it on tv) this country needs some serious education first - how do they expect people to be encouraged when there are so many small-minded people out there who make breastfeeding mums so uncomfortable about going anywhere in case there's nowhere they can feed without being looked down on?

Glad to see there are some supportive people on there too though. The rest of them are just either ignorant or immature x

okjust cuaght upon this thread and the ones u have posted kerry and i am enraged :hissy: how narrowminded are these people i actually really cross and cant believe some peoples reactions i will not feed my child in a toilet i will not make my baby wait if he is hungry i will feed him and they can try and charge me or whatever they want. there does seem to be some confusion amongst the officers over if they would charge a woman or ask them to stop. i personally think its a waste of police time when there are more serious things they could be dealing with and i WILL NOT STOP "!!!!

There was a woman breastfeeding her child on the tube this morning (I say child, because it definately wasn't a baby as it was walking and talking). Breast feeding in public really doesn't phase me - I'll be doing it and I dare anyone to try and stop me - but the LOOKS this woman was getting from the other commuters was incredible!!! One woman even got up and shuffled through a pretty full carriage all the way to the other end!

Now I'm not sure I'd be feeding my child on a packed tube during rush hour, but I was really surprised at the looks of disgust on peoples faces! I don't know if it was because the child was quite old or if it was because she was breastfeeding in the first place, but people's reactions didn't impress me. Europe and America are the only parts of the world where breastfeeding stops early - the rest of the world feed all the way up to 36 months!

Immature is right!!!!! Get over seeing my boobs as a sex toy and maybe you won't be so "offended." Which is why comparing bf to urinating annoys me. A man's penis has two, equally primary purposes- elimination of waste and sexual reproduction- so it is kind of a sex object that doesn't need to be flaunted in public. A woman's breasts have only one primary purpose- to feed children...the fact that sexual pleasure can be gained from them is incidental. You wouldn't give a hoot if my child sucked on my big toe and for some people toes are errogenous (sp???) zones...you gonna charge them too??? Grrrrr:hissy:

As most of you know, I am pretty rebellious about my beliefs we should be allowed to bf in public. But still, it's not like I hang it out there for the world to see- I am discreet (like others, I've had the experience of someone coming up to look, not realizing I was feeding) and I generally try to turn my back to the public as much as possible. BUT- I still dare someone to tell me to stop. It might be legal for them to tell me to stop, but I will still say no. And what are they going to do if I keep feeding??? Put hands on me and forcibly remove me??? By the time they talked it over and decided what to do with that totally unminding woman, my child would probably be done eating. I also dare someone to make an issue of it as I would LOVE to be the woman to take the issue to the US Supreme Court. If the World Health Organization says it is in my child's best interest and for their health that I bf until my child is two, how can a law criminally charge me for following "doctors orders." What do they think I am going to do- stay in my house and never leave for 2 years?? Ridiculous!!!!

i agree with everything u say BOOBIE POWER!!!!!

My friend worked in mcdonalds and some guy complained because there was a woman breastfeeding he said she should go to the toilet and do it! ...I'f somone said that to me i'd ask them if they'd eat there dinner on the loo coz theres no chance my boy is!

When I was in college and waiting tables, one of my customers told me he was offended by a woman at another table who was bfing and requested I go tell her to stop. I asked "And where would you have her feed?" He said, "Well, she could go to the restroom." And with my nicest smile I told him "I'd more than happy to ask her to feed her child in the bathroom as long as I can serve you your dinner in the restroom as well." He got pissed and asked for my manager (a male) and I thought for sure I was canned. Much to my shock though my manager supported me and told him woman have the right to bf in the restaurant. :happydance:

thas a good story to hear ragirl im fed up with people treating bfing women as lephers in public x i personally havent had anyone try and stop me yet but im more then ready if the do they wouldnt stop a bottle fed baby being fed would they xx

Exactly!!! Unfortunately I don't know if I will have an opportunity to "make my stand" as I live in a very, very pro- breastfeeding community- if anything I get tons of compliments on my "lactivist" shirts:happydance:

i think every where should be pro brestfeeding they want more mothers to do it but dont put the laws in place to protect them x

I cant wait to breastfeed when my LO is born and woe betide anyone who tries to stop me doing it in public! I will NOT become a social outcast sitting in my house for 9 months just to make ignorant narrow minded people feel better about themselves. If you dont like it...dont look!!!!
