But won't the girl being breast fed soon be learning about her own "boobs" as don't some children start to develop as early as 11? :s I would worry that this might change their view on their bodies and possibly confuse them.
Doesn't seem right having a child so big attached to your nipple, lol. But I guess if she thinks its right...
Just out of curiousity how old do you all plan to breast feed for? As I always thought 6 months would be my limit as I read that is when they stop benefiting as much and they start on solids too... but I'm not sure if what I read is no correct x
I'm passionate about breastfeeding but I think this is purely for Mother's benefit....she can't let go of her "baby" and isn't good for the child mentally I'm sure.
I wouldn't do it that long, but if they're all ok with it then I don't see a problem with it. I don't have a set age in mind for giving up, I'm just going to wait and see - but it will be for at least a year.
Scientists have reviewed this very question! How long should a human mother breastfeed?
They said "Let's take a look at nature! How long to other mammals breastfeed?"
Eruption of Permanent First Molars- It seems many species seem to wean around this time. For humans this happens at 5-6 yo.
Weaning age as a factor of gestational time-Small mammals wean at factors close to 1 to 1. Large mammals wean at factors much higher where primates equal 6 to 1 weaning age to gestational time. For humans this would mean 6 * 9 months, or 54 months or 4.5 years of age.
Weaning according to adult body weight-
Small humans wean earlier than large humans. Average ages translates to 3-4 years of age.
Weaning until 1/3 adult weight as many primates are shown to do-
For humans this means until 4-7 years of age.
Kinda interesting. I probably won't go past 2 yo if I can get that far, but this is some reading for those who are interested in the biology/physiology of extended breastfeeding.
I also want LO to decide on her own when to stop, but surely at a certain age, I will try to explain her that "big" girls don't need the boob anymore! the same you would not want to have your eight year old daugther sucking a dummy, would you?
No offence to anyone here, but why do you think it's so wrong? In fact why do we all (myself included) feel we have the right to comment and judge this woman, or any woman who chooses to feed her child longer than 2 years? Most babies in the world are weaned at 4 years, why is western culture so hung up on stopping mother and child having this relationship with one another?
I really don't think I could breast feed until 8. I'd not have the patience, I'm going to try my best to at least do the 6 months, and if I can longer.
There really isn't anything WRONG with what she's doing. But it is a bit disturbing to watch. I'm just wondering how her friends at school look at her (the little girl), or if she even talks about it. I'm not sure how long I will be breastfeeding my little man for, but I surely don't plan on it going over a certain age. The absolute cut off would probably be preschool. I'm sure he'll wean before then. But you never know!
