I'm relieved to hear all is well! I had some spotting that started around week 16, and still occasionally have some brown discharge in stretchy mucus I'm 19 weeks tomorrow. I panicked thinking I was loosing the mucus plug. I spoke to the on call midwife at week 17, who didn't seem concerned, as the bleeding was very light and mainly brown and mixed in discharge. She was pretty certain it was coming from my cervix because it was in discharge, although I never had an exam. She also said it's not uncommon to never find out the cause of bleeding.
I decided to book a private scan at 17 weeks 2 days for reassurance that all was well, I have a doppler so knew she was still alive but I was worried that she might not be growing properly as I hadn't felt any movement! I also had a mmc in April and was anxious partly because you don't hear about bleeding the the second tri that much.
The scan showed a very healthy and active baby girl! The sonographer found that the placenta was anterior but not low, which explains why haven't felt any movement or kicks yet.
I'm really glad to hear that I'm not the only one with blood loss in the second tri! The midwife said the only time I should be worried is if I loose enough blood to soak through a pad, and experience pain, otherwise she said it's not uncommon to get some spotting or bleeding throughout pregnancy especially as the baby is getting bigger and putting pressure on areas that aren't used to it.
