Hey, in my experience my epidural was topped up first (mine was emcs) then when I was numb they sprayed an ice cold spray on my arm and then from my knees to my neck and I had to tell the anaesthetist whether I could feel it and how cold it felt. Then they did the same thing by pricking me with what looked like a cocktail stick!
They then put up the screen so I couldn't see and my OH was sat next to me and they started the operation. I'm not sure how long it took for them to get baby out but it didn't feel like long, I'd say 15 mins. They wheeled baby past me then (stopped so I could see her) then took OH next door with them so that baby could be checked over by the doctor. The staff then brought her back in all wrapped in a blanket (and clean) with a hat on and weighed and measured her in front of me as I was still being stitched up.
They then handed her to OH and I could see her whilst he was holding her.
I'd say the stitching for me felt like it was taking forever, I really needed a drink and I had cramp in my arm and just wanted to stretch and move. The stitching took about 30 minutes (she did a real good job).
Then I was wheeled to recovery where they monitored my obs for just over an hour until I was taken to labour ward. I was in a room alone on the recovery ward and it was really nice to have tha alone time with baby and OH.
Don't be nervous, I had a really positive experience. I always said I'd crap myself if I had to have a section it it wasn't the big scary thing I thought it would be, especially as it was an emcs. Good luck Hun, you'll be fine xx
