Birth story!!
Its taken a little while but Im finally getting to sit down and write this!
We had been given the planned date for our girls to arrive at our 33wks scan so all we had to do was make it to then, and we did! 10th Juen 2015 at 36+6 we made our way to hospital for 7am, starving hungry, not allowed to eat, bags in tow and nervous! We got showed to our bed along with another couple, there was already one other couple there. 3 of us all waiting to be taken to theatre to have our babies! I was hoping wed be first on the list but we were second, a little frustrated at this point but oh well, still not long to wait! At 8:15am the first first lady was taken down to delivery suit to prepare for her section. Thinking wed have a while to wait we got comfy! I got my gown and compression socks on and curled up on the bed. At 8:36am another midwife came and got us, couldnt believe it! So we went down to delivery suit having lots of comments on my bump on the way down. We sat in one of the rooms with a birthing pool, so lovely and serene. About 9am a surgeon came in and asked a few questions followed shortly after by the anesthetist who did the same. At around 9:30am our midwife came in, she had been allocated one of the twins and was lovely! She went through all our details, made us relaxed and stayed with us until a theatre nurse came to get more details and take us down. 10:30am I was sat on the theatre table and prepared for the epidural. All the staff were happy and said hello when I got in there, Si was in the recovery room waiting. I was laid down and everyone was going about their duties, kept asking if I was ok and checking on me. At about 10:55 I asked if Si could come in so they went and got him, I think if I hadnt asked theyd have done it without him being there! 11am we heard one little cry/murmur, followed by a big big cry and the theater staff saying she had already done a wee! I cried and cried!! I could just about see Caitlin in her cot wriggling and screaming! Seconds later, another little single cry/murmur followed by a big one and I could now see our second daughter, Harriet in her cot, I cried even more in disbelieve that both our babies were here and crying like troopers! From now on time got a little blurry. They brought over Harriet all wrapped up who had also had a wee as she was delivered, I kissed her and thanked god for our babies, I couldnt believe how much like Oscar she looked!
Then the whirling washing machine feeling started. I could feel my belly moving round and round but no one touching it, very bizarre! Si went and trimmed the girls cords which I though was lovely as he had cut Oscars. The washing machine continued, I heard the surgeon asking for my legs to be put in stirrups, quite desperately and quickly, blood to be matched and one of the nurses asking for an urgent match on the phone. I panicked and asked Si if everything was ok. I had heard them say that there were cysts on my ovaries and they looked enlarged prior to this. The girls were screaming blue murder and weighed, 7lb and 7lb 1. Just 10g difference in their weights! The surgeon then asked for dad to take the girls to recovery, twice, so one of the midwives asked him to take them and went with him. Leaving me pretty scared on the table not knowing what was going on. I think this was around 11:30, I had text my mum to let her know they were here but I needed a bit of help. The anesthetist was by my side the whole time, he kept giving me drugs to help with the bleeding and contracting of uterus, he kept telling me what was going on, i.e I was bleeding more than expected but not too bad, he even stroked my hed at one point as Si had been doing before he left. I was sick a couple of times due to the drugs. I heard them say they had inserted a balloon and filled it along with vaginal packs x2. One of the nurses came and told me a little about this. 12pm the curtain was taken down and I was moved onto a clean bed. One of the staff joked I could have a full leg tattoo while being so numb, this was a very welcome comment to lighten the mood and I talked briefly about the ones id got, this poor lad had seen literally all of me!! All the staff had been commenting on the size of the girls and congratulating me. I was finally wheeled to Si and the girls, just got into the room and they said no, straight to HDU so we got moved there. From here we got the best care with our theatre midwives and the girls got latched on straight away, no problem!
It was explained to us that I had lost about 1500ml of blood, had the packs and balloon to compress the vessels and stop the bleeding, Id have to stay there until the following day when they would be removed. I of course also had a catheter. Si looked ill at this point very happy but so so pale. He was scared for my life I later learnt.
My BP was consistently low, I was on fluids and a hormone drip to help my uterus out. Blood loss had slowed and nothing was on the pads until 12am, bonus! Lots of drs kept coming and checking on me, midwives changed shifts, Oscar came and met his sisters along with our parents. The girls were feeding fab! At one point in the night the midwife took the girls to their station so I could rest as Caitlin was restless, shortly brought back and changed because they had both pooped!
Oscar came in with si the following morning and was a bit better than the day before. When mum showed him a picture of the girls before he came to see us he cried and said I want my mummy! 11am Oscar had been picked up by Sis parents and the dr came in to remove the packs and balloon, it was like he was unraveling a mile long piece of gauze! Quite painful too, not pleasant. Balloon drained, weird feeling. An hour later we sent si to get himself some food and I was moved out of bed, shit it hurt! My incision and the catheter! I was cleaned up, dressed and sat in a chair, which felt better in itself, before getting back into bed and catheter removed. So much better! We were then moved up the ward t 3:30pm just in time for my grandparents to visit. Walking and moving around hurt and made me feel sick but I knew I needed to as much as I could.
Caitlin was struggling with feeding now and had been on and off for 5hrs getting more restless and upset so we asked for a bottle for them both. they drank loads and settled for ages! I tried to mix breast and bottle but they just werent having it. Nothing was coming off me now so between us me and Si decided to switch to bottle. I had a shower and waited for evening visiting, we were then moved to a different room closer to the nurses station and started to settle down!
Bleeding was very minimal and in the end it was jaundice in the girls that kept us in an extra night, but Saturday we came home and finally started life as a family of 5!!
Its probably pretty rambled and Ive most likely missed things out, or waffled on! But there it is, my girls birth story!
