Calculating ovulation with big gaps between periods

Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but I am having so much trouble trying to work out my cycles, basically they are so erratic and irregular that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to. I have been blessed with 1 child after almost 4 years of ttc, dd is 4 now and we have been trying for number 2 since June 2015. I have polycystic ovaries but not the syndrome (doctor's words, not sure of the difference) and I do get periods sometimes, probably between 5 and 8 a year. My last was 30th nov and I tried charting ans using opks but life got busy and ttc fell by the wayside and I am desperately awaiting AF so I can start again but no such luck so far. I was looking at the clearblue advanced fertility monitor but it says may not be accurate for users with pcos (although apparently I haven't got the syndrome, just the cysts, not sure that makes a difference) and to start from the day after last period but I might not get one. Anyone in the same boat? Any advice will be gratefully received, I thought after having dd that my body would know what to do and the 2nd one would come easily, how naive was I?!

Hi Bumblebee ☺ I've got polycystic ovaries but not the syndrome too ☺ one of my ovaries seems to ovulate better than the other so i can range from 25-55 day cycles. Its a serious pain if ur a control nutt like me ☺. I can usually tell by cerival fluid changes and i can sometimes feel pain on the side that is ovulating. But other than that i can't really help...just wanted to show you support.

Sounds so frustrating! I don't have polycystic ovaries that I know of but I do have irregular cycles that drive me batty! What I usually do is ask my doctor for a prescription of progesterone to take for 7-10 days then AF starts and I get to start fresh with a new cycle. It's the only way I've gotten pregnant before. But if you can't do that I'd recommend temping and using OPKs, that should give you some idea of when you ovulate! And i totally know how you feel about having the first and thinking your body will know what to do for the next one, no such luck with me either FX for you!

Thanks both Hopeful cat I am like you, my left ovary is worse affected than my right and I can feel the pains on one side when I get AF. I'm feeling really bummed out by it all today, I've been doing my ovulation tests twice a day for 12 days now and have got nothing more than a very faint line so I'm just going to keep doing them everyday until I get positive tests but right now it feels like that'll never happen. I feel so blessed to have my daughter and if I never have more then she truly is enough for me but she is the sweetest, most loving little girl ever and I just know she'd make a fabulous sister and she always asks for a baby, in some silly way I can't help but feel like I'm letting her down. She took almost 4 years to conceive but I've been naive and thought number 2 would come along in no time! Thanks for your support x

I do have pcos and rarely ovulate. But I found tracking with fertility friend to be very helpful. It gives me a pretty wide range in which I might ovulate (10ish days). I have found it is accurate 60-75% of the time.
