Hiya

Lo was in hospital couple of nights ago and she wouldnt settle so they asked if we wanted to give her a bit of calpol then the next day on the meds rounds they asked a couple of times if she needed paracetamol. she didnt. I didnt realise it was ok to give calpol before 2 months? Does it help with wind pain in tummy which isnt relieved by burping?

Xx

I didnt realise u cud give it under 2 months either. It was my hv who advised me u couldnt!

I think the front of the bottle says "2 months" but I seem to remember something about 8 weeks when I first bought calpol when I was pregnant. Maybe its 8 weeks but 2 months is catchier to remember so they put that on the front to make it obvious? Not sure really.

Also sometimes under doctor's care its possible to give what would not be recommended over the counter. For example when I almost ran out of Isobel's gaviscon before the next prescription I asked if I could buy it over the counter if I ever did run out. They said not until she was one, even though we're regulars and they know she's prescribed it.

They sold me calpol when LO was two months and had his first set of jabs, the pharmacy said that it's fine for them to take it but that the doctor normally prescribes it when they're that young.

Doctors can give it before 2 months. There's new rules on how to give it now though, from 2-3 months there only allowed 1 2.5ml spoonful in a 24 hour period. After 3 months they can take 2-3 2.5ml spoonfuls over a 24 hour period. I personally wouldn't give it for wind pain. Have you tried infacol?? That's worked a treat on my LO with his trapped wind xx

In hospital they can give calpol/paracetamol to babies under 2 months old as they are able to work out an accurate dosage based on babies weight and can monitor them closely

I wouldn't advise anyone to give calpol to a baby under 2 months without a prescription and accurate dosage worked out by a health professional and even at 2 months I wouldn't give my LO more than one dose in 24 hours

Thanks ladies. Yup they give her about 2.5ml and offered 2 more lots in less than 24 hours. I tried infacol and gripe water, no effect! I love calpol, might get myself some :D

Exactly this.

My lo had calpol at 2/3 weeks old as she had her tongue tie cut and just wouldn't stop screaming at night .. I rang emergancy doctors as it was that bad .. And they worked out a dosage that I could give her and how often ..
