Can I claim?

Hello I'm currently at college but will be starting university after the summer. I'm a lone parent to a five year old. As far as im aware I can't claim income support since my child is five but does anyone know if I'd be able to sign on for job seekers before beginning university. Of course I'm hoping to get a job but I know things fall through. I've never claimed anything before so I've no idea if it's even an option to claim. It would only be for those few months.

As it can depend on how many hours you are going to be doing at university and also with Jsa you have to prove that you're looking for work, and therefore to take a job if you are offered one.

The link should help, if not it might be an idea to give the job centre a call and see if there is a different benefit that you might be entitled to x

Thank you for that. I think I will give them a call and see what my options are. I'd be happy to take a job if one was offered but I don't see that happening because I'd need to leave in early September to start the uni course xx
