Hi my LO is 8 weeks old and we have been giving her omeprazole dissolved in a syringe since Friday, I dread it when it comes round to administering it as all my LO does is choke on it as I guess it tastes that bad, I do manage to give her the dose but I can't keep doing this to her everyday I resorted to adding a little orange squash to the water today and she then took it fine, can you please give me some advice and weather it would be ok to give her a small amount of baby juice x

At 8 weeks I wouldn't be giving baby juice regardless. Is she breasted or formula fed? Perhaps dissolving it in a wee bit of milk or formula would help to hide the taste.

The only reason I thought of this is because people seem to be giving their LO's juice for constipation and its alot more than what I want to give mine just once a day, it says on the leaflet u cannot dissolve in milk or fizzy water needs to b put in normal water or something acidic like juice, I'm waiting for the doctor to ring me to see what she thinks x

The pediatrician told us to make it up in water then drain the water off. Make up some carobel paste (you can buy it in the chemist) and mix the little beads with a small amount. Then use your finger to put it in baby's mouth. He said it was fine to do even though my little one isn't on solids. It's much easier!

How do you do that? As I'm putting tablet in the syringe and sucking up baby juice but it doesn't dissolve properly, can u explain how u do it? thanks :) x

I put the tablet in a cup and add 10 MLS of water. Once it has dissolved I use the syringe to suck up all the water leaving the wee beads behind. In a separate cup I add 3 scoops of carobel to 60 MLS of water and leave it to thicken. It turns into a paste and then I put a tiny spoonful into the beads of omeprazole. Then I use my finger to put it in baby's mouth. The first time he was a bit perplexed by the consistency but he quickly got used to it and he never chokes any more

I put the tablet into one of the wee tommee tippee formula pots and add 10ml of water and stir. Then I let all the beads settle to the bottom. I use a syringe to suck up all the water leaving the beads behind. I'm another container I add 3 scoops of carobel to 60mls of cooled boiled water and leave it to thicken. Then I add a half a spoonful to the beads and use my finger to put it into his mouth. The first time he found it a bit strange because he'd never had anything solid in his mouth but he got used to it really quickly. Also, he doesn't choke and if he spits it out you can easily get it back in his mouth. Good luck!

Hi, with my daughter she is on a small dose at the moment. I have to mix the tablet with 10mls of water then give her 3mls. I mix this with baby juice, but some of the tablet is still left in the bottle as it doesn't fully dissolve.

What dose are you on?

ps. my doc said baby juice for 4m+ was fine for her to have.

Any other suggestions on how to administer Omeprazole would be appreciated..

Hi I ordered some carobel from the pharmacy yesterday and picked it up this morning so gave her the omeprazole with the carobel paste and it was so much easier to give to her, it's messy but there was no choking. mine is on 10mg tablet once a day x

Is it as effective having it this way as on my packet it says it can only be mixed with water or juice, not to be mixed with food or milk?

Annie the above poster said the pead told her to administer it this way as I didn't have any other option as my LO was choking so bad when I gave it to her with the baby juice she just sicked it all up, I've also started putting carobel in my LO's feeds today as per Annie above and it's like feeding a different baby, as my LO has struggled since 2 weeks old with her feeding due to the milk rising up and down her throat. if ur LO struggles with feeding I highly recommend putting this in their feeds and u can also get it on perscription if it works xx

Also carobel isn't really a food it's just a thickening paste so not sure if its classed as food x

My lo is on gaviscon which I guess is the same. I read what Annie wrote, but still don't quite understand how you turn it into a paste? Is carobel a powder like gaviscon?

it's by cow and gate and yes it comes and a powder, u just mix with water and it turns pasty then u just stick it in LO's mouth and they chomp on it, I gave mine a small amount of baby juice after she took it in a bottle to wash it down as it still can't taste nice, and it is similar to gaviscon but mine LO was in gaviscon in the beginning and it didn't work but this seems to turn the milk much thicker and its gets even thicker as it hits their tummy, every baby is different though x

So happy it worked!! :). I know how stressful it all is. Just a shame about the carobel nappies. I made the mistake of putting cream chinos on my little man the first day :):)

yes I know, we had a disaster at 3:30am this morning picked LO out of her crib for a feed and she was covered in poo, very messy! Changed her formula to hipp organic and carobel yesterday so guess her tummy has to get used to it all, seems to be firming up a little as the day is going on. And she is feeding so much better, nice to finally see her feed comfortably and not in any pain. u have def saved me alot of stress for the future :) x
