I have been told by different people that i can give him water and by others that i cant until 6 months. I live in Spain and the weather is getting hot. He is on formula now as i could not continue to breastfeed. HELP!

Thanks

Babies don't need extra water as they get all they need from the feeds but a ounce here and there does no harm in hot weather. The problems start when they are given to much water it fills up there tiny stomachs so they don't want the milk at the next feed. If you really feel LO needs some then give a little but personally i wouldn't do it regularly

we were told a ounce every now and then was ok, but dont let it become a normal routine.

yes definitely. I've been offering cooled boiled water the past couple of days now it's been warmer, in between feeds. She sometimes has a few sips.. other times takes up to an ounce. They'll only drink what they need. As long as it's not near feeding time so you don't fill them up with water. Altho you'll prob find if you're baby is hungry they'll spit out the water and continue crying for a feed. x

^^ what she said ^^ :)

Cooled boiled water, yes. I have been giving it since LO was 2 weeks old. I normally give it with some kind of herbal tea, mainly camomile because it soothes her, and when it's plain water she seems to get bored of it pretty quickly. Obviously don't overfill with water when LO should be feeding, but an ounce or two is fine before hand. Between feeds, my daughter has been known to have 2 or 3 ounces on very hot days.

Yeah I offer cool boiled water sometimes to settle her rather than offering a dummy, also in hot weather I tried to make sure she had an oz here and there.

i live in gibraltar (south spain) and i know how hot it is getting now :) i have been giving max cooled boiled water since he was about 4 weeks he doesnt have some every day only when he wants it, he seems to know the difference between being hungry and just thirsty, often when he cries he wont take a botlle of milk but will have a couple of oz water and is a lot happier. also sometimes he will have mazanilla but thats a very spanish thing and is probably controversial on here!

olivia is 16 days old and our health visitor came to see us yesterday, before she left she told me that while the weather is warm i should offer ollie some cool boiled water i between feeds to help her cope with the heat xx

I asked my HV and she said that cooled boiled water is fine. It may even help her go longer between feeds. But I have to say I get a look of discust off of my LO cause it's not milk, she will take a little and I think in the hot weather it cant do any harm..... :hugs:
