Hi all

my LO has been referred for grommets so i not really discussed it proplerly yet as that will all be done at the next appointment but someone mentioned to me today that they didnt think they could go swimming if they have grommets?

is this true?

i hag grommits twice as a child, i did go swimming and loved it, but found if i went underwater to much i would get ear infections, Also i dont know where i heard it but i though they no longer offered grommits?

i hope you get the answers you need!

My mum has grommets and she gets ear infections if she goes under water or gets too much water in her ears plus if she goes underwater too deep (ie bottom of the pool) she gets pains in her ears and they start popping and bleeding.

I had grommets as a child. Back then we were told that it was fine to go swimming, but I had to have cotton wool and vaseline put in my ears to protect them.

That was about 20 years ago, so it may have changed a bit now.

I had tubes (grommets to you) for much of my childhood when growing up. You can swim (I did all the time) but it is important you don't get water in your ears. I had to wear protection against that -- either very tightly fitted ear plugs that would not leak or come out, or we would take a couple of cotton balls, smear them in vaseline and stuff our ears with them, packed tightly. (My sis had tubes, too.)

We still got ear infections ocassionally. But it was worth it to be able to go swimming!
