My husband and I are low income. Last week I withdrew the $2000 that my prior workplace had put in a retirement fund for me, so I'm expecting a lump sum of money soon. Unexpectedly, our van (which needed tons of repairs and was generally unsafe anyway) today became outright unreasonable to bring our newborn home in in the next week or so. So I'm going to be using my retirement fund to buy a cheap, used car.
I've looked around and see few cars I'd consider buying. Now comes the hard part and a real dilemma. I worshipped my first car. I was just telling my husband a few days ago (before we were car shopping) that I'd give anything for one. It was a 1990, but at 17 years old it got 40 mpg. I loved driving it. And...I just found the same thing, a 1994, with 78,000 miles, great condition, for $1000. Its reviews read the same way I felt about my car. But I know repairs, while cheap, can take a while because parts are harder to find. I desperately want this car, but I don't know if I'm being logical...I feel too strongly about the model. There aren't usually cars this old driven in this area because of high salt usage destroying them, but this car was out of state and hasn't been destroyed by salt yet. I worry about repairs, but then again, I never failed to get a repair done on my old car, at least. I never had to pay more. My husband is tall, too, and this car is small and low...but it's not like we can be picky. Am I being logical? I'm so confused. I'd do it if it were just me, but I have a family to think of and I don't know if I'm thinking rightly.
