Let me start off by saying this is an old story, a little over 2 years to be exact lol. I wasn't on these forums when my son was born and I wanted to document my birth story here. I'm going to try my best to remember all of the details and it might be quite long.

Today marked 41 weeks into my long and never ending pregnancy. At 40 weeks I was told I was a 'fingertip and a half' dilated and fully effaced and to expect to go into labor sometime before the week was over. The week came and passed and there I was, hugely pregnant and miserable. Just in case, she scheduled an induction date for September 20, which would put me at 42+2. I was dreading the wait.
The early morning of the 11th, 1:00 am to be more specific, my boyfriend (now husband) and I were settling down to go to bed. This was the first night off from his new overnight job since he started the week before and we were excited to finally spend a night together. We were laying in bed and I got up to use the bathroom. Sitting on the toilet after emptying my bladder, I felt AND HEARD what can only be described as a cork popping inside of my uterus right onto my cervix. I thought the baby hit my cervix hard and that was what caused it, but then it happened again. I also thought I was peeing again, but it was definitely a decent amount of liquid for just having emptied my bladder.
I put on a pad and walked back into our bedroom sort of confused, excited and just an overall feeling of not knowing what to do. I told him that I thought my water just broke, but I wasn't sure. He advised that we wake up his mom (we were living in her house at the time) and see what we should do next. At this point I had to go into the bathroom and change my pad as I had leaked completely through it in about 15 minutes. While getting a new one, I soaked my pants before it started slowly trickling and then the leaking stopped altogether. She told me to definitely call L&D to see what they thought we should do. The nurse on call told me that what I described sounded like a textbook breaking of waters. She told me to wait an hour to see if contractions started up... In this time I took a shower, had something to eat and made sure things were packed and ready to go. The hour had passed and no contractions were in sight.
I called L&D back to tell them there were no contractions and no more leaking waters. She told me to come in anyways to get checked out. At around 3:00 am we were walking into labor and delivery. She brought us into a monitoring room where she hooked me up to the monitors. Baby's heartbeat was doing great and caused nothing of concerns. I was also having contractions but could not feel them. Next they brought in the swab test to see if my waters had indeed ruptured. The nurse came back and told me that I had just peed myself because the swab test didn't show any fluid despite everything I told her that happened. I was so upset and very discouraged at this point and we went home empty handed at around 5:00 am.
FAST FORWARD to Friday, September 13, 2013 (41+2)
Zac had just gotten home from working both jobs (4-10pm and then 10pm-7am) and he was exhausted. I had gotten into the habit of staying away all night texting him thinking, "the baby will be awake all night anyways so I might as well get used to it." When he would come home we would sleep the day away together until he had to get up to do it all over again. Today was different though, we had to go to a doctor's appointment for my 41 week checkup and a NST before we could finally go to sleep. Luckily the appointment was at 8:00 am so we wouldn't have to be awake for too much longer.
During the NST the baby wasn't doing as well as the OB had hoped. She had me eat some graham crackers and drink some juice but his heart rate still wasn't making the excels she was hoping he would. I told her what happened the other night with L&D and my waters breaking (or peeing myself) just to have some small talk. I thought nothing of it because I was told I peed myself and just walked away embarrassed. She seemed very concerned with my story and brought in the rolling ultrasound machine to check for fluids. It turns out that the fluids around baby's head were very low. She told me that it was very possible that his head blocked the flow of fluids as he was so low and the amniotic sac resealed itself. She told me that she wanted to get me in for an induction THAT day because she didn't want me waiting any longer with my waters having ruptured two days prior. She sent us home and told us that she would give us a call when there was a bed open in L&D.
We got home and expected to have a little bit of time. Zac laid down to get some sleep and I decided to vacuum the room before I was going to lay down as well. It was 11:30 am and we had only been home for 1.5 hours before getting the call; it was time to come in and we had gotten basically no sleep. I called my mom to tell her that things were happening and to start making her way to us (she had an 8 hour commute ahead of her). We got the bags and made our way into L&D. We were shown to our room immediately and I stripped down into the hospital gown. I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and someone was coming in the room every 15 minutes to explain something to me.
Around 3:00 pm a nurse finally checked me and I was already at a stretchy 3cm. They decided that I didn't need the pill to help me dilate and they would start the pitocin drip at 5:00pm. I got hooked up to an IV with fluids, antibiotics as I tested group b step positive early on in my pregnancy, and the pitocin. Around 6:00 pm Zac's parents and sister came into the room to hang out with us until things got going.
Nothing super exciting happened for a while; they kept gradually increasing my pitocin drip and soon enough contractions were coming on very hard and very fast. They were coming every 1.5 minutes and lasting for 45 seconds to a minute at a time.
For a while it was just everyone hanging out in the room hanging out and talking. I was struggling to get through some contractions and with the fluids I had to pee every 15 minutes and it was really obnoxious. I started getting sick to my stomach everytime I would get up and at 11:00 I finally caved in and said I wanted an epidural. The nurse told me that the two Anesthesiologists were currently both tied up right now and I would have to wait patiently. In the mean time she gave me something in my IV that made me feel drunk and warm but it didn't help with the pain very much. She said that and the epidural were the only two pain management options they offered.
At around 11:45-12:00 the Anesthesiologist finally came into my room and started talking to me about the epidural. Soon enough it was finally in, but it didn't make things as easy as I'd have hoped.
The epidural felt kind of nice, I'll admit it. Not too long after receiving it though, I couldn't do anything with my legs whatsoever, they were so severely numb that I couldn't feel anything from about my belly down. The doctors realized the medicine was too strong and that they needed to tone it down. They cut the epidural medicine in half and then I started to notice something else weird. One side of my body was still completely numb and I could feel absolutely everything on the other side.
At this point everything went blurry for a little while, I remember getting oxygen because I was passing out, but other than that everything is a blur. I remember having everyone except for me and Zac in the room so we could try to relax a little bit and be alone.
At 2:40 am I was checked again and was still at 8 cm...
Around came 3:00 am and this is when I started coming back into it. The pain got a lot more intense and I kept feeling like I had to use the bathroom. The nurse kept telling me, "you have to hold off, we just checked you and you're only at an 8." I told her that she needed to check me now because it hurt so bad. She gave in and checked me right then and much to her surprise, I was fully dilated.
They had a doctor come in and they started having me push and push and push and push, yet nothing was happening. I was still way too numb on one side of my body and couldn't even feel what muscles I was pushing with, if I was pushing at all. After an hour, nothing was happening. They told me they would lessen the medication again and give it time for the epidural to wear off. They also said that they wanted to allow my body time to rest so the contractions could help him come down on his own a little further.
at 5:20 am my mom came back in the room and after not pushing for a little over an hour, the epidural was completely worn off and I couldn't handle the pressure anymore. It was so painful that I was passing out and had to be put on oxygen again. The nurse gave me the ok to go ahead and start pushing again. This time it was easier to tell where I was pushing from.
6:00 am I was still pushing. Baby's heartbeat was getting hard to find with the monitors so they had to place a monitor on top of his head. This is when they discovered that he wasn't even down into the birth canal yet.
7:00 am I was being fed Italian Ice and Ice Chips by Zac. I was so hungry and so tired I was ready to give up. I still kept on pushing, no change with his head just yet.
8:00 am I wanted a csection... so so badly. I was emotional, wanted to give up and just meet my baby already. Everyone was trying to convince me otherwise.
8:30 am came along and a shift change took place and a different doctor came in to check on baby. He said that the baby wasn't down into the birth canal and it had appeared that his head was very awkwardly shifted. He was trying to come out with his head cocked to the side. The doctor grabbed baby's head and shifted it slightly. He said, "there, try pushing now." I tried pushing again and then I started to hear everyone's voices change pitch. "again again! Keep going!" I could tell that the end was near.
I could feel everything, including the ring of fire! I know why they call it that now!!! At 8:49 am my beautiful baby boy came into the world after a long and exhausting night/morning. The placenta was delivered almost immediately afterwards and my husband cut the cord. They put him directly on my chest and he just looked at me and he was the most precious, beautiful thing I had ever seem. I remember him having very pruned skin and a full head of hair.
I ended up with a small tear requiring 1 stitch and two tiny tears that didn't need any attention... they just stung when I would pee.
He laid on my chest for over an hour. He fed once and then he just fell asleep. This was when we thought it would be a good time to have his stats checked and make sure he was ok. I also was dying to get a shower. The nurse told me that I probably couldn't walk because I had an epidural, but I got right up from my bed and walked to the bathroom without issue.
He weighed 6lbs 12 oz and 19.5 inches long. He passed all of their tests with flying colors. He even flipped a few of the nurses off while changing his diaper lol.
This was easily the hardest and best day of my life and I can't wait to experience delivery to yet another baby boy!
