Hiya :flower:

I wasent sure where to write this anyways...

I have a son whos 2 in june his last name is double barreled mainly because we were not together long when i found out i were pregnant so i dident want my son having his last name i wanted it to be both.

Now we have been together nearly 2 1/2 years and have another child on the way i wanted to know if anyone has actualy been able to change there childs surname without going through (deedpoll) actually changing it on the birth certificate.

We are not married either we live in the UK i want jayden and the baby im carrying to have the same last name and i dont want to double barrel it like Jaydens. I want them both to just have there fathers last name.

xxx

You can change your surname without doing it legally, but the downside to that is that when he gets older he will have trouble obtaining a Bank Account etc or anywhere that would require proof of ID.
My daughter had my surname and we called her by her dad's all throughout school but when she turned 16 we got it changed by deedpoll.

As far as I know there's no way of changing the birth cert, that will always stand. You can do it by deed poll though, it's pretty simple and you can get all the forms you need online.

When Dan was 5 we changed his name, he took my name because we werent married and had been going through a bad time, but just before we got married we changed his name to his fathers surname. From what I can remember all you need is the father and mothers consent and you both have to sign a form, he got a new birth cert and medical card with his new name on it :) I live in Northern Ireland so it shouldnt be any different where you are. We just phoned the city hall, birth and death reg. and got all the info there. This was 7 years ago, dont know if it has changed. x

:hi:
My son took my name at birth but we changed it when we got married. As far as i know thats the only way you can change it on the birth certificate but it was very simple when we did it, we just had to go and re-register him!
You can change your son's surname without marriage but you have to fill in a few forms and stand infront of a judge at a small fee. Ring your local registry office they will know exactly what to do! Takes time but will be worth it! x

if the double barrel doesnt have a hyphen its easier to just drop the firts of the 2 names

ive always used my parents last names but when i was 16 i decided to just keep my dads surname

on forms and all the legal stuff it just looks like my mums surname is my middle name

Mum changed my name when i was 12 and she went to the solicitors and paid £45 i think it was then signed a few forms and then we had the proof to change my name on all my documents. x

I looked into this i cant have Lukes Birth cert changed as FOB would NEVER sign the forms :( so i am going to change his name by deed poll! ....i hope its simple anuff ... does it just mean in the future whenever he gets a passport/bank card i would need to send off a copy of deed poll as well as birth cert ?! sorry to hijack xx

You can appeal it Hun. Does he have any contact? My sons bio father refused 2 times and I appealed and they ruled it in my favour because he had no contact for over 2yrs and didn't pay maintenance. If your really desperate you could just use a "known as" name like someone else mentioned x

you could look into re-registering the birth, im not sure how long you have to do this but my freind did her ds's when he was 18 months (scotland)

i have that problem...my sons took my exs last name as we were together when he was born, he stills sees his dad all the time he has him a few days over a week, but it bothers me that new baby will take df's last name and when we get married i will take his last name so we will all have the same last name and jayden wont! sorry for hijacking too!!!!

I dont know how much help i can be here but i had my daughters surname changed last year. She was originally in her fathers surname and because he has no parental rights i could change it without his consent, although he is on the BC, the BC doent get changed, ever if you via the deed poll you get an additional certificate which must be produced with the original BC when applying for anything such as a passport. Deed poll is also the only legal way other than the solicitors. If you werent married to babies father you CAN change the surname as there is no parental responsibility unless been given in court.

Please refer to this link
https://www.ukdps.co.uk/CanIChangeMyChildrensNames.html

All options are here and if you are unsure they are very helpful when you ring them. If you on benefits you also get a £10 deduction.

A birth can only be re-registered if registration took place within the last 12 months i believe (UK).

Hope this helps xx

was that for your daughter on ure ticker... it says she is 9? that is prob why u could change it so easily, the law changed in 2003, and now any father named on B.C has parental rights(as if married) ... x
