Cheese is perfectly fine during pregnancy people! (minus these few)

Actually, listeria among pregnant women isn't that uncommon. Years ago I had an Aunt who gave birth to a stillborn baby at 32 weeks due to a listeria infection. She could only recall one instance where she ate a cold deli sandwich. Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis. About one-third of all reported cases happen during pregnancy. Listeria doesn't care about "moderation", as this person stated. All it takes is one meal- and I highly doubt anyone here cares more about lunch meat than the health of their unborn child. I've heard things on both ends about the nuts...I couldn't live without peanut butter! Its my main source of protein nowadays. One doctor told me that eating peanut butter is recommended because it could help build a peanut allergy immunity for your child, but other things i've read said the opposite. Who knows!

In most cases, the risks presented by all of these foods are actually quite minimal and unlikely to occur. Poor food handling practices are MUCH more likely to cause problems than the foods themselves - you can even contract harmful bacteria and viruses from fruits and vegetables that have not been properly washed (or have been handled by someone who did not properly wash their hands before preparing them).

As for sushi, as long as it has been flash-frozen prior to consumption, it is absolutely as safe as cooked fish. The flash freezing process kills bacteria, viruses and parasites. I have been eating raw fish throughout my pregnancy, and I was talking to the waitress in one of our local sushi joints the other day and she told me that women in Japan eat sushi during pregnancy all the time with no ill effects. That said, if your provincial or state health authority doesn't require sushi grade fish to be flash frozen, you might want to avoid it, but I believe that most places do have this requirement.

Relax and enjoy your pregnancy :)

Despite what you are saying about listeria, it is a very wise idea to avoid chilled meats when pregnant unless you know they are freshly sliced and to make sure sushi is very fresh when eating it - it is actually more to do with the rice than the raw dish (if the rice is sort of hard then it's a no go, but warm, soft rice is perfectly fine...great even ).

When a non-pregnant person consumes food infected with listeria then they may not even have any symptoms/issues. However it can be dangerous, even deadly, to an unborn baby. So please be careful. The risk isn't massive, but it's still there.
