Can anyone explain to me what a chemical is? Is it when the pregnancy starts in between ovulation and AF, i.e. implantation takes place, but then it fails and you get your period around the time AF would have normally been due?

I am 9DPO and had a few positive symptoms but now they seem to be all but gone. Could this be a chemical?

A chemical is when the egg fertilises but doesn't implant so you body starts producing the HCG and you may have symptoms but it is never a viable pregnancy. You then usually get AF around the right time or perhaps up to a week or so late.

The only way of knowing whether you are having a chemical or not is to test with a sensitive test. A chemical won't usually get picked up by a IC but it can be detected with a better test. Just depends whether you would feel better knowing or not??

Hi Raisin,

A chemical is exactly as jeanettekaren has said, its when implantation fails so AF arrives as you would expect or few days later.

I had one last year and my doctor said due to the availability of the sensitive tests over the counter, the amount of recognised chemicals has soared as more ladies are able to test early, he advised me to hold off testing early in future and to wait until day of AF - easier said than done though, although I am being rather good at the min lol x

Thanks for your replies. My biggest fear is that I get a BFP on Saturday (the day AF is due) and then I lose it due to chemical. I cant take another loss. If I test on day AF is due could I still get a BFP that ends in chemical? Or would it not be strong enough to show as BFP by that point?

A chemical can occur up to a week or so after AF is due so even if you are late it doesn't necessarily rule it out unfortunately. If you want to test, use an IC because, as I mentioned before, an IC will likely give you a negative if it's a chemical. If you get a BFP with an IC, in my experience, it is more likely to have implanted.

What is an IC?

I was going to ask the same thing, I have lost 2 pregnancies very early and so would love know what the IC is. Thanks

Does anyone know what IC is?

Sorry, internet cheapie test. Just the plain paper strip test that isn't very sensitive.

I've had two chemicals. With the first one, I had a whole lot of symptoms from about 7dpo. But soon after, they disappeared rather quickly...and shortly thereafter, my period showed up. Early.

Pay attention to your tests. If they aren't getting darker OR are getting lighter...that's also a sign. But yes...disappearing symptoms are signs too.
