Hi just wondered how many godparents my LO can have, also do they have to be christened too? I am not christened but my DH is, does this matter?
Also does anyone know how much they cost?
Thanks :flower:

I think it depends on the church. We are Catholics and are having three godparents which was the same for our daughter. They like at least one of the godparents to be a catholic. Our church doesn't have a set fee but your expected to donate. I suppose you just donate what you cAn afford. But it could be different at differentchurches.

I'm finding the whole day very expensive though- the party after is costing £500! Then we've got the christening outfit, my dress, my daughters dress, the cake etc! So much for one day! X

We're Catholic and from my exp its a female godmother and male counterpart (Godfather) from any christenings I have been to this is the standard - although I remember reading on here I think it was that a lady had two godmothers......not sure what religion she was though  its just not anything I've seen personally :flower:

As far as the way it's thought of where I'm from ...the godparents should be catholic and attend mass regularly as i think the concept is that they then help/guide the child, set an example?? also they then (or one of them I should say) generally "stands" for them at their confirmation.

I didn't really realise until I had my first child that you had to pay / "offer donation" to the priest after the service (this applies to marraige also) generally here 50 -100Euro or equivelant in sterling is given. So yep I have to agree I found it quite expensive as the christening outfit was about 150Euro and then we had a party in a function room after in a hotel so obviously paid for food for those who attended (this is also the norm where Im from) and then whoever is out for the night stays for some drinkies :flower: babies/children go home at this point Lol. For our second child we might just have a doo in the house after the christening and go out later - cut down on the cost somewhat but we'll see : )

depends on which religion you are having them christened into as to the "rules". For example in C of E it's traditional to have two godmothers and one godfather for a girl, and two godfathers and one godmother for a boy. However, I think most vicars in C of E will let you choose however many you want nowadays (within reason). In C of E it is also up to the vicar whether the godparents have to themselves be christened as well. I have some muslim friends who are godparents and the ceremony was performed in a C of E church! However, as someone else pointed out I think in catholisism generally the godparents should be catholic. You will need to enquire with the church and the minister where you intend on having your child christened.

my LO is bring christened in 2 weeks time... we just have to give a donation to the church ( the vicar suggested £2-3 to pay for the candle), will be obviously give more.. the gown was Lucy's great grandmothers wedding dress made into a christening dress. Her grandmother and daddy wore it. I have hired a function room for £20 plus £4.50ph for the buffett, there is a bar there. I'm getting an £11.00 cake from Costco and I have spent £28.00 on balloons.

Job done,

We're catholic and i had my sister, best friend and cousin as godmothers and OH also chose his brother as godfather to ruby when she was christened last month xx
