Hi Ladies,

I have an insanely silly question about coffee and complexion. I was chatting to my best friend who just had a baby last year. I told her that I'm having one cup of coffee in the mornings to curb the migraines and how I was worried that the baby might get addicted to caffeine while still in my uterus. Of course, she's assured me that it's safe to have up to 2 servings of caffeine/coffee a day which my OB has also confirmed.

Now...while chatting she told me that one of her colleagues claims that because she had coffee throughout her pregnancy, the baby's complexion looks a a little tanned. Both parents are super light. So her colleague claims that the coffee stained the baby's skin. The whole thought process is that coffee generally leaves a mean stain on clothes so why not on skin. Is this even possible!?!

My best friend was always under the impression that skin color and complexion was genetics. But she had admit that the both parents are super fair, but the baby does look a bit of tanned. Silly thought right?

I have a BS in biology and had many genetics classes. there is no way that drinking coffee could stain the baby or make it more tan. It is purely genetic..they must have someone in the gene pool that is darker and somehow the baby got those genes :)
my younger son is a little bit darker than both me and my husband..my dad is darker than me so he must of got something from there :) oh and im not a coffee drinker so couldn't have stained him.

I am sure that is nonsense. If you smear coffee on your skin you do not get more tanned. And drinking stuff does not make your baby more tanned either. Unless possibly it was carrot juice cause of the vitamin A - which one should avoid too much of during pregnancy. Thing is I am very light skinned and I don't tan at all well where as both my parents are kinda darker skinned and tan easily. I am just taking after my grandparents. And my mum is a coffee addict lol

I am a medical professional and this is not true whatsoever, coffee beans have no capability of staining a person's genes!!

 Sorry but this made me giggle.Sorry.

Ribena stains but you wouldn't end up with a slightly purple baby ;)

I would bet a million dollars that this is certainly not the case! There is no way coffee could cause tanned skin in utero, just as eating a blueberry popsicle every day might stain your tongue but not make your baby blue!

I'd sy it's much more likely the man isn't the baby's father. :winkwink:

Baby's sometimes look entirely different then either of their parents! I have a friend who is a brunette, as is her husband, and baby came out with firey red hair! :)

aww bless you lol sara and jen your replies made me giggle.

i drank a lot of coffee when pregnant with ym son and he came out fine btw x

I knew it was a super silly thing to ask. But I figure I'd ask anyways.

I was pretty sure that it's genetics. I guess when you're pregnant, you'll start hearing some silly stuff!

Whats funny though is that I have gone totally OFF tea and have turned to a cup or two of coffee a day..just this week though. I change with my hot drink every week, last week it was hot chocolate and week before mocha...

I have such a bitter taste in my mouth everyday though
